Down this way there is a poem by Henry Lawson about an old woman, who due the trial and tribulations of her life, is just past carin'.

I wonder if the comment that old people are out of touch with what is going on around is correct or they are just "past carin'".

I remember asking my grandfather at various times about issues of the day and to most of them he had little interest.

Do you see this among family or friends that they simply no longer care about many things as they get older ?

Yeah I can see how people could be that way, the death of a spouse, health issues, and the onset of geezerhood are probably triggers.

I'm getting there myself.

My old Swedish grandmother was like that, as long as she could have a cigarette or two during the day she was happy knitting some doilies and listening to her canaries sing to her.Sometimes she'd lease out a bedroom to a young woman going to collage just to help them out and have some company around. I never heard her complain about anything or talk bad about anyone, never once.

She had 7 kids and outlived 4 of them, lost her husband in 1955 and never remarried. She had 15 grandkids and she'd give us a card with $5 inside sometimes on a birthday, but we'd always get a hug and some cookies when we came to see her. She lived to be 93 and didn't seem to be too concerned about what was going on outside in the wider world, if she had opinions she kept them to herself.

I think as you age you start to realize that a lot of things you used to fret / obsess over aren't really all that important after all.

ECS-3 nails it.

I'm 62, and read the morning paper from first page to last every single day for 40 years. And I'd have the news on all day long on a small TV in my office.

Then we moved to the High Rockies where a newspaper is hard to get, so I decided to try going without it. Found out I really didn't miss it at all. And I rarely watch the news, because we get Denver news and it's not very relevant to me. Don't miss it either.

So, yeah, maybe I'm past carin'.

“Mentally and physically you just can't carry all that "stuff" after a certain point in your life.”

That could also be attributed to wisdom that comes with experience. I, for one, carried too much when I was younger.

Last week I couldn't remember which day the city had set aside for street sweeping.
I didn't look it up.
I was past caring.
The parking control officer, unfortunately, was not past caring.
She hung a ticket on my windshield.

I still don't care, but now I have to write the city a check.

I turned 70 last December and it is true that, at least for me, I tend to not be as obsessed with all the fine points of the news and politics as I once did. Actually, I find I am not all that jazzed about a lot of things that used to really excite me.

I haven't gotten to the point of not caring, but do find myself thinking, "meh: I'll probably be dead by then" whenever I start to worry about some potential, future calamity.

In that regard, I worry more for my kids and grandkid than for myself.
