We have a lot going on legislatively right now here in Illinois, and I’m fed up with this state and how one region full of know-it-alls are running (and ruining) it. My job allows me to work remotely, I think it’s time to look at saner states like WI or IN.

Grrrr.

Based on my brother's FB rants, I wouldn't recommend Wa state.

There are only 4 states left that get my nod - Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho. We are the last best places for our kind. No offense to any other good state I don't know about.

South Dakota would be another, Chris - and maybe North Dakota - but winter is extreme.

SD is not a populated state, but still some nice places - if you like remote, go out west near the Black Hills (you CAN avoid the tourists) and Sioux Falls is a nice small city (around 200K population).

I’m very fond of east river SD, but traveling to my office for occasional work would be difficult - there are limited transportation options. I’ve considered retiring to the Sioux Falls area, but that’s a few years away yet.

I debated adding South Dakota because it's a terrific state for retirees. North Dakota, especially the west, is fabulous but oh those winters…

I think that most states, depending where you live and where your interests lie, could be ideal.

Go West, young man! Just be sure to stop before you get to the coast!

Colorado is great as long as you stay away from the Front Range.

Not California. I'm too dug in to leave. I've lived my life here except for four military service, and have watched the golden state become tarnished. There are better choices.

I’m a CA child. Not there.

I very much enjoyed CO on our recent honeymoon, but I think politically it would be more of the same of what I’m dealing with in IL.

IN and WI still make the most sense.

Sadly, Nevada dropped off my list.
If Reno and Las Vegas were deeded to neighboring states, perhaps.

My daughter chose Utah.

I grew up in downstate Illinois, but left in 1980. After spending most of the 80s and 90s in Louisiana and Texas, I've been about half an hour away from Illinois and once thought I would retire on my portion of the family farm. That is now unlikely for the reasons mentioned in the OP.

One of my band mates owns property in Montana. The summer pics look great, but the winter pics don't. I liked Wyoming, the only state Chris mentioned that I have visited, but Missouri has too much winter for us these days. If we were to move again, north would be an unlikely direction.

Reno is a fast growing city that is still affordable. Lots to do if you're in inside or outside person.

I've lived in Colorado for 45 years, moved here with family in 1973.My wife and children are natives.
It's become California #2 here.

We're out, moving to the Carolina's this spring. Wife has been offered a position with a company outside of Charlotte so we are looking at either northern South Carolina or outside Charlotte area.

I know Charlotte is probably no different than Denver, but we feel there are more options there.

Not WA,
We lived in Kirkland for three long years and were extremely happy to watch the Space Needle disappear in our rear view mirror for the last time. Western WA is California.

We lived in MO for several years. Springfield to be exact. We really enjoyed the life there but, if we were to return, we'd live further away from the city.

There is plenty to do and the outdoor life is outstanding (camping, fishing, etc.).

Plus, it is the only state to have Lambert's "Home of the throwed rolls".

It's far enough from "tornado alley" not to getslammed as bad as the neighboring states but they do get a few. The winters usually aren't that severe, except this brutal winter wave that's been burying the US nationwide.

I'm bound and determined never to relocate, but if the circumstances were right I just might consider it.

My wife left Illinois 30 years ago and the only time we go back is to visit. She has zero desire to return.
