We all want

our time in hell

I've kept my eyes open for months, but nothing's jumped out at me, and well....I'm not an early adopter of anything in the tech realm so waiting for reviews and real-world experience with the new Boss multi-effects unit.

I also didn't see anything in the Christmas and post-Christmas clearance stuff that jumped out at me as "You must have this" - I suspect at three Gibsons I don't need another and I'm very peculiar about what I want (and it isn't the blues lawyer stuff). Fender's new stuff is insanely, insanely overpriced and if I'm going to spend $2k on a Jaguar etc I'll just pony up for a player-grade older one.

I've been looking at something bigger than my Roland System-1 - which while it sounds very, very, very good, has no menu-diving, etc., I just wanted something complimentary with some other features. I'd had my eyes of a few things (and missed the Dave Smith clearance on a few things sadly), one of which was Behringer's Deep Mind 12.

I've been happy with the company's modern pro-audio stuff (that's not chasing the bottom of the price-point unless that's the range you're looking at) and have a good source on open-box/demo stuff at a few dealers, and was offered a hell of a deal on one ($649) by a dealer I've bought from before.

I think about it for a bit, run the figures in my head, and it's well within my slush fund monthly budget (and can be paid off in a year or less at 0%, so...). Still comes with a warranty, return policy, et al. So I pull the trigger, and get a call a few minutes later.

They'd oversold the open-box ones they had sadly.

But apparently that was to my advantage, as they're now sending me a NIB one for that same price. I can't say no to a price I could flip it at if I don't like it and make a few bucks.

Arrives Thursday according to FedEx.

12 voice analog polysynth, I'm ready to be the Super Modren Man.

That things got a bunch going on. I’ll bet it sounds awesome through 20 fuzz pedals. You’re definitely going to hell.

Can't exactly demo something that's not due here until Thursday, and well, I do audio, not video.

Ain't no Telecaster!

I think you may need to refer to the manual with that one Rob.

Just out of interest, apart from the obvious fact it's a keyboard how does it compare in terms of capabilities with guitar synths such as the GR55?

Two different beasts.

The GR-55 does a ton but isn't very hands on while playing (for obvious reasons and the fact it's not knobs and sliders).

I have a Roland System-1 as well (which I sometimes will use the GR-55 in conjunction with or just as a "guitar synth with different voice module".

Deep Mind 12 is a 12 voice analog polysynth (System-1 clocks in at 4 voices), GR-55 is somewhere around 64-128 poly high end but has two distinct PCM synths plus the vGuitar modeling (+/- 24 on a per-string basis in the software, among other things).

Mostly I want it for a larger keybed than the System-1 and as a second sound module for the GR-55, as well, as the hands-on control/tweaking.

I go different places playing with knobs and sliders than I do guitar, and different places even more with knobs+sliders (albeit limited) and guitar instead of keys.

Thanks Rob.

I've yet to take the plunge but have been interested in guitar synths for some time but feared they might be a poor man's synth for those who are keyboard phobic.

Sounds more like they both have their place.

The GR-55 is not a shoddy beast by any stretch - the PCM synths are individually tweakable ad nauseam. This is not the "select violin, that's what you have" of old.

Full on ASDR/adjustable settings/etc.

I have been GASing badly for a Synth, either a Dreadbox Erebus or Nyx. Not really compatible for guitar but I've being itching to experiment with Pink Floyd sounds. I have no interest in digital and really want an analog synth.

I'm borderline on taking the plunge because I still don't understand them enough and would like at least a little guitar compatibility. Probably will need a sequencer as well for "On The Run" type sounds as well. I am reluctant to buy add-ons to get the sounds from in my head, hence further reluctance.

For digital, I wasn't sure myself.

The Roland System-1 is digital but I'd never guess by listening to it or by the 'no menu diving, hands on' thing. Limited in the sequencer department, but a lot of analog or ones aping them are. It fulfills my "pretend it's Hawkwind day" well enough!

Mostly I can say just keep your eye open and see what works and is available and just play with one if you can.

Rev, That's a pretty cool unit. I had a GR-33 for a while but didn't use it enough to warrant keeping it and sold it to a buddy. Someday a Moog will sit on top of my Hammond in the living room. That presents a whole new world of problems of what do I plug it into to have it make actual noise.

I'm enjoying a Behringer XR18 these days as my main gigging PA board (I love being wireless ditching the snake!) and find it good for recording too. I like Behringer electronics, they deliver a lot of band for the buck. I'm not wild about their powered speakers but that's a different subject entirely.

Enjoy! Congrats!
