Two Strats I've GASd for over a number of years are the MIM '60s Classic (and a '50s Classic because I have a '70s Classic) and some sought of Jimi Hendrix Strat. I haven't really being able to justify spending money because I already have two '60s style Strats (AVRI '65 and MIJ '66), and a the Classic '70s fitted with CS '69 pups which gives me Hendrixy Woodstock tones.

I've dreamt of a Monterey themed Strat since Fender released the CS version in '97. Along comes the 2017 MIM 2017 Jimi Hendrix Monterey Stratocaster. Yay! Happy days!

The guitar is the same specs as a '60s Classic with the not-so-accurate Monterey paint job. It is a tribute and is inspired by the Monterey Strat so it's no biggie it isn't accurate (the '97 CS version was not accurate either). It has a non-traditional Pau Ferro fingerboard. Not a problem given the current situation with Rosewood and the price range of the guitar. The pups are the standard Classic series OEM. In comparison to the pups on my AVRI '65 (which has custom grey-bobbin '65 recreations) they are thinner sounding and not as complex. They are, to me, a generic low output vintage-toned pup. Nothing wrong with that though, they sound great when overdriven and are a variation of the many subtle differences between vintage Strat pups. This is the third guitar I've had with 'em and they are more than adequate.

Fit, finish and set-up is to a high standard that I now expect from Mexican Strats. Can't fault it at all; the set-up is perfect for me out of the box, straight neck, well dressed fret ends, good quality neck pocket (which is the primary go no-go thing for me), all is good.

Love the Fiesta Red (always wanted this colour to partner with CAR and Dakota Red guitars I have). The white 'spray over' is vintage white which looks cool. The original Monterey Strat had a yellow flower on the upper bout, this one is red. The red area around the jack plate on the original is larger, on this guitar it's smaller. There are many minor differences but, hey, who cares, the intent is not 100% accuracy.

To summarise- In many ways there is nothing special about this Strat. It's basically a good quality Classic '60s. The paint job, Hendrix neck plate and Hendrix headstock signature sets it apart an provides an inspirational vibe and makes it a little unique. The fact that it's not accurate is irrelevant because it's a tribute guitar, and it's impossible to make it a 100% accurate because of Hendrix's unique art style and the poor quality Monterey photos.

Do I like it? hell yeah! It's cured GAS for both a '60s Classic and a Hendrix Strat. Couldn't do much better than that.

Glad you like it and nice review. Coincidently I had just changed strings on my white JV Strat prior to checking in to the FDP this evening. It has a CS '69 in the neck, so it sort of has the Jimi Woodstock thing going. I'll be spending the next hour or so with it.

Enjoy you new Strat!
