"It also weighs a ton!"

I see from your profile that you're about my age. Careful moving that thing: last time I moved mine from its old location, I did it by myself, a piece of foolishness which may have contributed to my developing an inguinal hernia which required repair. Yours is probably even heavier than mine.

Displays of macho bravado are for the young...

That's a nice machine you have there Ryder. If I lived in your area I'd love to help you break it down and restore it.

Anyway -- if you don't want to deal with it, you might put it up on Craigslist. Someone will snap it up quickly. You will likely get someone to pay what you are looking to spend on the Wen.

Sorry I can't help you on a recommendation for a newer machine -- I just haven't needed to look into them. But the drill press is such a central piece of equipment in a shop -- I encourage you to think long term and buy the best you can afford.

Buy used, a quality name, and save a ton.

Delta, Craftsman, Jet, and other big names all use jellybean (common) bearings, and they are inexpensive. The older the machine, the better it will be. Make sure the chuck is operating smoothly and the motor stays cool.

BUY USED !!!

Lots of garage and yard sales around.. skaroo krags list and the rest of the bottom feeders.

"...skaroo krags list and the rest of the bottom feeders."

Have to partially if respectfully disagree there, jefe: there are many things I wouldn't shop on CL, but I have picked up a nice, old Delta 14" band saw and an old Delta 24"jig saw on CL for good prices.

But I do agree that CL dealings can be a PIA and even dangerous and I don't sell stuff there.

Thanks guys. I won’t be lifting it. Bad back and three heart attacks. That just might do me in.

Nosoap, you are just a little too far...always the case.

I bought a barely used Delta X5 14” bandsaw on C.L. and have been quite happy with it. I know to check something over before buying.

I’ll just have to keep my eyes open around here.

I also wonder if someone around here could fix it and at what cost?

The people who frequent the site linked below might be able to help you. I got lots of good advice and even some parts from them when tuning up the old machines I bought. Lot's of knowledge/experience there.

I've had a Delta bench top model for over 20 years. Serves my purpose and never a problem.

These guys look to likely have parts for your drill press. They rebuild at least the spindle/chuck. Perhaps they do more, or can help you find out more about the rebuild process.

On the other hand, a nice Jet might be just what the DR. ordered. Northern Tool has them. The 579.00 model looks pretty sexy.

While rebuilding an old machine to keep it going is admirable, sometimes they need a complete overhaul to be an accurate and reliable machine.

Good resources!

Wouldn’t mind a jet drill press. I’ve got a jet tablesaw that is a good one.

But, I’m not rebuilding this drill press. I don’t know enough to attempt it.

Northern only shows the $799 model.

Rockler has a homeowner grade press for $299.

I don't know how you are going to use the machine. Maybe this will do?

NoSoap, I did see that (your link didn't work). And somewhere else too...home depot I think. I'll bet you it's not in stock at the home depot here.

I don't drill a lot, but when I need to I need it to be true.

I think I use it more than I think.

My other issue with rebuilding is time. I just don't have enough of it....I'm retired! What's wrong with me? I have art projects lined up in my brain. I'm 68, not the greatest of overall health but am still able to work physically for shorter amounts of time. It's either that or sit there and paint...maybe when I'm older. Just rather tired of it after 35 years of doing it to make a living.

Whoa, went on there a bit didn't I?

OK -- I fixed the link. Rockler will ship it to you.

I get it that rebuilding a machine like this isn't for everyone -- I'm just pointing out that your Rockwell has some value. No need to use it for a boat anchor or send it to scrap.

Here's a link to the 579.00 model, Ryder. If the link doesn't work, then perhaps their site is set up to see your location and that there isn't one in your area?

Taildragger, LOL that’s for sure.

Thanks NoSoap, that one will work for me. And when I get to it I’ll see what I can get for the Rockwell.

De vile, I think you are correct. Thanks. And now that I see it, I think I would be ok with the 12”. I really don’t need 16 speeds and a 3/4 hp motor.

Cool, I like Jet!

OK -- I just want to be clear. I am not recommending this machine. I have no first hand experience with it -- I was just helping out with a lower cost option since you showed an interest in Jet.

I don't own any Jet tools -- no particular reason other than I always leaned more toward Delta. Jet stuff is generally well regarded so this may be a fine tool. I just don't want to steer anyone to a tool that I have not personally used.

Have to partially if respectfully disagree there, jefe:"

Locally, if you buy or sell off of Craig's List..

it is well known, and practiced, that you meet in a well lighted, highly trafficked area, preferably a police station parking lot, library etc.. and you bring "back up" who has the funds if you are buying.. you do not carry (even concealed) money to a deal.

Forgot, also have a Jet 6” jointer. I like it too.

NoSoap, I totally understand. And thank you for helping. Also, I won’t be giving away the drill press unless one of you guys want it.

I would have to have them come here (C.L.), I’m not moving that thing! Meet in the garage. I’ve got plenty of weapons handy if need be. I live facing a much used residential road, have had mt truck broken into a couple of times and when I’m working at night I usually have the door open for awhile. I try to face the door if I can.

The old Rockwell has been on CL for a week or so. One guy emailed to ask if the noise was in the motor or drill press.

Bummer, that's it.
