It's 70 here in the DC area today. Blazing sun and it looks like a good day to go sailing on the bay.

I'll bet a lot of boaters are looking at their shrink-wrapped tubs and thinking really hard about it.

20degrees F this morning, was in the high teen's over the weekend. Hard Ice packed roads off the main drags and we still have March to go. 1-1/2 cords of split wood left, and 180 gals of #1 fuel in the tank I'm cutting it close.

That is it... March 7. They are here. Stepped outside for a moment and heard the geese. Looked up and there they were. First group this year. It is now official... Spring has arrived in the North Country no matter what the Nor’Easters are doing one after another.

By the way, we are due to be hit by the latest Nor’Easter over the next few days, but...

The Geese are here!!!

The geese have been on the move down here. Lots of Arctic birds- buffleheads, little auks, brant geese, among others- winter over here on the southern New England coast, but they start making their moves as the birds who have been farther south start moving up, like the red wing blackbirds, who appeared March 1. These big equinoctial storms either pull them up or keep them back.

Last few years there have been some snowy owls, also snow geese and sometimes more European birds that were blown off course and end up here. Tropical storms in the summer will often pick up more southern birds, like pelicans, and deposit them up here.

March and April are usually the snowy months up here in the High Rockies. Hope that holds true, because we've had very little snow so far, which means fire danger in the summer.

Everybody is hoping for a big 2' dump.

That said, I'm out the door right now to go skiing. There's enough snow for that up at el. 10,000.

This started me thinking. I usually see several large flocks of geese down here in my semi-rural area. Not a goose this year, not one. Very few ducks too. Must be the lack of water, they went somewhere else.

Have fun Ragtop, we got basically nothing in SoCal this year. Man-made at best, yuk.

Winter is officially over in Tampa Bay when the Canadian snowbirds from Quebec go home and the greens fees are halved. We have a couple months yet eh?

(Highs this week are low 80's but that isn't how we measure seasons here).

Well, this thread hasn’t aged well. I had to put the snow wands back in the completely thawed ground, haul out the shovels and gas up the Ariens. 8-12 inches of snow forecast today, but that’s a walkback from the 12-16 forecast earlier. But not unusual for March! It’s a month of changes!

I was just 1 minute away from asking if the shovels were out yet.

We're back in the low 30's again at night, below freezing Wednesday night. Wackiest late winter/spring I've seen yet down here in northern/central Fla.

I went skiing on Sunday and played golf on Monday.

The air has a different feel to it. Feels like spring.

CO2 ... is there anything it can't do?
Mar 13th, 2018 11:27 AM   Edit   Profile

I lost two more Spruces -- one is down and laying across my side deck and the other, a larger tree is leaning out across my driveway. I just went out and chained it to a nearby Red Bud which has a more substantial root system. This Spruce is a goner but I'm just trying to keep it off my cars for the remainder of the storm.

The wind is supposed to shift from the NE to more westerly later this afternoon, so I may catch a break.

They have been forecasting 14-20 inches here -- I don't see that happening with the wind blowing the way it has been.

I'm getting too old for this crap.

Sorry, I have to agree with the Prof. We have chickadees building a nest in one of our birdhouses, and bluebirds fighting over another. Seems awful early for this, but IMO the birds know more about the weather than the forecasters on TV, any day.

I hate to see this thread fall to the second page before winter ends. We’re getting more Weds.

Meantime,... back at the ranch... We scored -30°C (-22°F) in cottage country over the weekend, almost as cold in Montreal. This after 3 Nor’Easters in a row, the forecast is for sun and warming temperatures this week. And Spring officially arrives tomorrow, but wait, there is a fourth Nor’Easter on the horizon, making its way from the Rockies across the plains then up the coast.

Oh Joy!
