The article reports that cinder blocks are often used as a dummy payload. In the relative overall scheme of things (cost of mission, Musk's wealth), there's not a whole lot of price/cost difference between a big load of cinder blocks and a car. No harm done to anyone or anything, except to the article author's sensibilities. I think it was a cool thing to do, and reflects the out-of-box thinking that makes Musk the success he is.

He should have sent a 2003 Nissan Altima -- those things just self destruct after a couple years.

The discovery of this thing in outer space is going to confuse the crap out of some alien civilization ......... along with episodes of I Love Lucy and Duck Dynasty.

I would have sent a platoon of Murray riding mowers with maniquins kitted out as Army Rangers sitting atop.

And a copy of Jimi Hendrix Radio One.

Could have included the complete set of Twilight Zone episodes. I think the Martians would have enjoyed those more than the Tesla.

I hope they at least removed the engine from that thing (unless a Martian joyride is also in the works.)

They should have sent Rosie O'donnell. I do believe that rocket could lift her, and as a bonus the aliens will be scared shirtless.

Use of the term ‘cinder block’ in an article on technology cheapens the piece. Cast blocks have been made from cement and sand mix for many years now. They’re not made with cinder/slag/etc.

Using the term cinder block is like calling an aircraft a flying machine, or a refrigerator an ice box.

I was thinking the same thing. We don't even use "cinder" block in load testing in the heavy truck world any more.
