"For its first test mission, the Falcon Heavy will launch a dummy payload. Specifically, it'll send a cherry red Tesla roadster from Elon Musk's personal collection into deep space. There's no scientific reason to send the car to space. But it does serve as self-promotion for Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla."

RKSTRAT....I am FLOORED by this! Did you see the two booster rockets return to Florida and SIMULTANEOUSLY LAND UPRIGHT ON THEIR RESPECTIVE PADS?!!!? It was so cool, it looked fake. I'm still waiting to learn if the third returning engine successfully landed on the drone ship.

We watched live! The liftoff gave me major goosebumps just like the old Apollo liftoffs back in the day.

My thoughts exactly Charlie. Watching those two boosters land ever so gently about 1/4 mile apart in an upright position was more impressive than the launch. Elon is a bit of a doob, but you have to admit his SpaceX program is quite the feat for private industry. Next step: Mars.

That was amazing -- but I agree, the landing of the side boosters didn't look real to me. Presumably, they will have some additional footage with other camera angles.

Picked up some toys for the grandaughter. A friend of the wife's was giving away a playhouse and a little, toddler slide/climbing structure. I bet she'll enjoy them and the price was certainly right.
The lady cleans some (to her) un-used junk, grandaughter gets new (to her) toys: win/win!

Imagine a mission to Mars, conceived, funded, launched by a government bureaucracy ....

The crew pops the champagne cork upon touchdown on the Red Planet ........ only to discover they have landed on the outskirts of Muskville, a thriving community established there by private enterprise 20 years earlier.

"And what did you accomplish today?"

My thread title was cryptic......but it occurred to me what a feat the
whole thing was.....recovering the rocket engines in a soft landing and sending a car in orbit.

If the car payload was released in orbit.....why won't it continue to orbit? Hopefully it won't become orbiting space junk.

Wow, thanks!

I have always been jealous of Floridians, as they have the opportunity to catch such event live throughout the space program!

I figured out that my LP Jr. cranked through a Vox AC15 sounds killer when playing Doobie Bro's "China Grove", other than that not much else was really accomplished.
