I have decided I want one of my amps back from my grandson. I have gifted him guitars to include, Godin 5th Ave acoustic, Takamine 132S , high end Ibanez Jazz guitar, a Fender American Telecaster, a Uke and a Cavaquinho (which I built)

I have loaned him 2 and given him 2 amps I gave him a highly modified Epiphone Valve Jr yet newish and unused by me... (bought new) a Bergara (sp,
and loaned him a 1979 Silver Face Fender Music Master Bass amp and a custom made 1 of 50 Blues Jr with Green Tolex, wheat colored grille, Cannabis Speaker etc.

I do not want to deprive this thankless squandee the use of an amp but, given I have had no thanks or reciprocal effort on his part, and I have only my massive LAB Series L5 to use..
I am going to ask for one of them to be returned(presuming he hasn't abused them like he does everything else)

Which would you choose, the 1979, or the Custom Blues Jr.

Thanks

All I can say is I feel for you!

And I'd choose the Blues Jr.

Good luck!

Thanks, that is my choice.

Did I mention I have given him three Mics to include a 40s absolutely cool Flash Gordon unit..
Cords , stands, dozens of sets of strings ,pedals, cases, tools (about $500 bucks worth) Spent another $500-700 fixing up a couple of his guitars ( gifts from others) Fixing A Honda Odysee (SP) which OI gave him then he burned up twice, I fixed, then he crashed and sold and didn't tell me.
Crashed his mothers car which I fixed at about $5000 ...
There's more but I really don't feel like helping him anymore.. other reasons to include lying to me, not showing up when promised, embarrassing (SP) me by .. well I'll.. quit there because the list is far too long.

He is lazy, ambitionless, thankless, sullen, rude, (won't answer phone calls e mails or texts to either me or my wife) irresponsible, unreliable.
He is a very fine violist and guitarist. He decided to be a guitarist and has the skills but being a slacker, he won't go anywhere.
He is a parasite on my daughter and she puts up with it. Not me, whizzes me off.
I think I'll cut my losses. No one in my family has ever been like that.

He's 21 now. Time to carry his own water.

If he wasn't related, I wouldn't know him.

I think I'll go get my Blues Jr. hope it isn't beat up.

If he's such a dick why the heck did you give him all that nice gear? I'd consider backing up the truck & repo'ing all of it, then maybe teaching him to play ...

this old chestnut. On a kazoo.

OP's a grampa. Hope springs eternal. Or at least awhile.

I've been a grampa for almost 3 months! No disappointment yet.

I hope you get your amp(s) back working.

Years ago I lent my next door neighbor's kid a small practice amp. More than a year later I asked for it back and it was blown up :/ No explanation or apology either.

Father is an ex and a big hot shot/crew chief with one of the world's most famous racing teams.

I stopped giving stuff to this kid about two years ago and offered to have him work for me doing stuff around my property and house and so on and also I had him do some work on my web site all at $20 and hour .
When he did show up he showed no interest, or did not show and did not call to cancel.

All of the he stuff I gave him was to inspire him.. forgot .. I also gave him his viola and bows and paid for all the set ups etc. He is a fine violist.

He also plays guitar very well, far better than I.

I gave him the Epiphone Amp this last Xmas and the Mic a few days later for his birthday.

I got no thanks, but a head nod.

Gotta go work on my other house to get out of dopeville, more later.

Hopefully you can set the reclaiming of the Blues Jr up in advance.

My sense of it (based on your commentary here) is it could very easily be little more than an opportunity for you to explain to him what a jackass you think he is. I can't imagine you would come out of that looking good.

I get that you *loaned* two amps and are simply trying to pick one back up, but you say you have no clue what condition it may be in ... heck from some of what you say I hope he hasn't sold it.

The reality I see (something I would consider were it me) is that it might be better to go out and buy a nice amp of your choosing and forget this mess.

Do your best to drop the bitterness and move forward.

That does not mean *forgive and forget* it means leave this emotional mess behind. It seems that whatever his values system is, you don't see life though the same lens.

It seems he can't inflict havoc into your future unless you allow it in.

BlondeStrat steps off his soapbox. ;)

Go out and buy yourself a new amp as a gift to yourself for your generosity to your grandson.

Kids these days seem so entitled it does not surprise me that you have not received any thanks or appreciation for your acts of kindness. It sounds like grandson has never been taught to acknowledge or reciprocate when showed such generosity. That is a shame.

"Father is an ex..."

I sort of figured that there was not a man around the house to serve as an example.

I believe that if there were more daddies around, the world would be a better place. Just my tuppence.

He had several opportunities to go live with his father in Indianapolis, but after brief visits discovered that there was an expectation of self reliance, and responsibility. He chose to return to his mother's abode.

He did have a job at a grocery store, a cutesy boutique foodery where he managed to stay for about 8-9 months.
I went in there a couple times. Unkempt, morose, slow, no energy, no drive no sense of urgency
Then he was gone. Offered no explanation. I am guessing others sensed his level of contribution was not in line with expectations..

He then decided to be an independent computer nerd and is doing some work for others setting up and maintaining web sites (including dope growers).
I asked if he had any involvement in the production or sale of dope. He said no. But I wonder.

He dropped out of college at the end of his first semester where his grades reflected his participation. He is extremely intelligent and computer hip and a literate musician.. but no ambition and has never had any.

I considered going out and getting another amp, but why. He takes too much for gt=ranted and, this amp is one of 50 and, I like it. and I am considering this... giving him the LAb Series L5 as a gift.. If and Only if my Blues Jr isn't trashed.

I have decided that I will continue letting him use the Music Master Bass amp which I did have completely overhauled and it is a great amp.. perfect for the Tele or a harp player.

My wife says she doesn't like his attitude but also says that this is the new standard.

You got it... he thinks he is "entitled".. I fear that this may have come from his mother (my daughter) and my ex, her mother my grandson's grand mother. From a very wealthy family (Pebble Beach) every thing handed to them.

Worked on the other house today, correcting hack wiring done the day it was constructed back in 1974, very creative back then.

The kid has been invited several times to work over there, 15 minutes form his house.. no show and no interest.

When he works out here in Dopeville ( used to) I'd pay him $20 an hour and $20 gas money. Apparently that isn't enough anymore.

BTW he has never, not once, volunteered to help do anything . Never.

Let him keep a 1 of 50 Blues Jr.. and spend $500 to get one of the new run of the mill units.. inclined to say no...

If I bought myself a new amp it would likely be an AER.

Hell, if I was 16, or 21 and my father was a famous crew chief, I know where I'd be. Working for him. Even if that meant sweeping the shop floor.

I have found your experience with your grandson to be what I found with 90% of the kids we hired. Never had to fire them because they left after a day or two. Oh yea they expected to be boss in a week.

No friggin way I'd part with the Lab Series L5...especially if it's in good shape. They are great amps and have a good following among many.

K4.. that was offered. And the company has been national and international champs many times.

I wish I had that kind of an opportunity when I was a kid..
even for what I do and know and could offer.. ... no interest because it involves showing up on time and showing some interest.. whether raking up leaves, setting fence posts, cutting firewood, replacing the well pump, overhauling a stationary water pump, replacing the timing belt on his car (twice)... working on my MGB.. no interest.

My wife is VP of Human resources for her company she is #2 and only answers to the owner.

Anyone under 30.. useless.
Showing up for interviews in holy jeans and smelling like weed, slouching, knowing nothing about the company. Then when she finds a few that seem worthy, half don't show up for paid training. And then after the training half don't show for their first day at work.

Willie, I really, really like my LAB Series L5, same as BB King used. Mine's in excellent plus condition and a great amp.. all be it about 75 lbs, and though on wheels should be motorized : )
I got it when I bought the 77 hard tail Strat as a package all for $150...
Sold the Strat for a serious profit and kept the Lab Series L5.. still have all the original paperwork and schematics, owners manual etc.

Prefer it over Fender Twins.

NOOOOO ...Not the Lab L5. She's a keeper.

Just my 2¢ Worth

Go get the Blues Junior and don't further enable the grandson by replacing it with anything else.

You're more tolerant than I and much respect for that. But, if it were me (and I know it isn't lol) I'd collect all but one guitar I'd lent and all but whichever amp I wanted the least.

If he decided to pursue playing, showing some ambition and responsibility, then we might have a further discussion.

Hope you get the Blues Jr. back and it's in good condition.
