I have been addicted to those PG Rig Rundown YT clips.

It's clear that serious gigging musicians put a lot of time in tone. The big stars have no problem with what amounts to different rig for each song. In essence they have their pedals on all the time and then have a controller with preset patches.

Moreover it's also clear there is no one pedal or rig that is a holy grail. They think in terms of the entire signal chain instead of one particular pedal that is good for blues vs country.

Lastly all of them have the luxury of setting up their rig at some location the day before and then tweaking things according to the room.

In my next life I want to have a guitar tech and a stage manager so all I have to stand there and the guy hands me a perfectly tuned guitar and amp and pedals already dialed in.

I'd like to see what these guys got if the plugged a Strat, Tele or LP straight into a Twin Reverb and played a show. No effects at all.
I think some would be ok and some would not sound all that great because of the help they get from their boards.

"...I'd like to see what these guys got if..."

That's one of the things that impressed me about Albert Lee last time I saw him. His "rig rundown" was guitar, cord, amp.

Always liked seeing the subdudes. Tommy Malone plays great and his slide work is very, very funky. What always impressed me about those guys is that they would show up to a gig--whether in a small venue or an outdoor festival--and set up their gear themselves. Nothing fancy. Just great playing and great tone.

I've enjoyed the few Rig Rundown vids I've seen.

The one that sticks out in my mind was Jeff Beck (well, Jeff's gtr tech). It was a very simple rig like 3 or 4 pedals.

The video is no longer available, but I know one of his pedals was an MXR Carbon Copy and the others were just as pedestrian. Nothin' booteek.

I'd like to see those folks play through MY rigs.

It's funny.

The "guitar-cable-amp" guys always handed the guitar back and said "it sounds better when you do it" or some variation.

I loved the recent Rig Rundown for Animals as Leaders, particularly the Tosin Abasi segment.

I loved that fact that Abasi uses pedals for OD and distortion, not a high gain head or the Fractal Axe FX he was using.

NOTE - Tosin Abasi is probably the most innovative guitarist around today. What he does on extended range guitars is simply amazing. Sort of a combination of Jaco and Alan Holdsworth on one guitar.

"I'd like to see those folks play through MY rigs."

That actually happened to me many years ago. Most of you probably have never heard of Geoff Moore And The Distance. They're a Christian Rock band and I helped with one of their local concerts.

When they arrived, the guitarist said, "Well, it looks like I'll just be playing acoustic tonight because it's the only gear that wasn't lost by the airlines." Since I didn't live far away, I ran home and got my rig (Rivera Chubster 40 and pedalboard) along with a righty Tele that I was setting up for a friend.

My rig never sounded so good. :o)

Yea, you at least have a *normalish* rig.

My pedalboard has over a dozen fuzz and extremely high gain dirtboxes.

Not a transparent overdrive to be seen.

Many sonic destroyers.

Rack stuff. Stereo and tri-amp signals flying.

Guitar synth.

It isn't going to get someone "Smoke on the Water". :)
