Today I bought a 1984-87 E-Series MIJ strat. It's rocket red (I think), has a real nice Fender Series 1 Tremolo, rosewood fretboard. Came with the original case. Plays nicely, but will get new strings ASAP. Any others out there? Ballpark value?

In primo shape, $400-$450.

That System 1 vibrato is not one of Fender's best moments, so it's not really sought after. In general terms though, the build quality of the MIJ Squiers is pretty good.

Get it professionally set up and it will play really well. Be gentle on the vibrato's fine tuners. The steel screws tend to strip out the threaded holes.

I own a Fender MIJ '86 Strat w/ System 1 that I bought new in '86 (my first 'real' electric) and I love it. The system 1, while a bit "busy", is pretty easy to get used to and very precise. Mine has a locking nut too which makes keeping guitar in tune a breeze. Peegoo's right - the fine tuning screws are a bit delicate and usually the first to go. Mine are, thankfully, still present and in good shape.
Enjoy!
