I Dare To Be Different

I was on business in downtown Houston and decided to stop by Southpaws on my way home. Others than a trio of Martin dreadnoughts, I really didn't see anything that excited me. When I got home, I told my Mom that I had a new appreciation for what I already have.

BTW, the trio of Martin dreads included a D-41, a D-42, and a D-45, none of which I could afford without liquidating at least half of my current stable.

I haven't looked at their inventory (online) in years. The last time I looked the web site was in transition and a mess.

I was in Houston for a couple of days in November and, had I not had something planned for each night, I likely still wouldn't have gone to Southpaw because of the insane traffic in that city. It took me over two hours to drive 50 miles on one particular night. :^O

LeftyMeister, the next time you're down this way, I'll pick you up and take you to Southpaws. Same goes for anyone else.

Leftee, I don't think that all of their inventory is on line. For example, that trio of Martins is not listed on the site.

Tex, I planned on seeing if we could get together but my evenings booked up quickly.

"...the insane traffic in that city. It took me over two hours to drive 50 miles on one particular night. :^O"

Traffic in Houston sucks when it's moving. All it takes is a minor fender bender for the rubbernecking to turn it into a nightmare. I could drive to Southpaw without getting on Loop 610, which is the quickest route for me, but the number of traffic lights and stop signs would defeat the patience of a saint.

Tex, do they still have a large collection of Taylors?

I've been there exactly twice, both over 20 years ago. And after one of those visits, I did buy a Heritage 535 from Jimmy via the internet.

Really wanted to buy a Martin 15 series on one of those visits. Jimmy actually let me take it home overnight (to my aunt's home where I was staying) and put a set of new strings on it to see if I wanted it. But finances wouldn't allow it at the time.

Don't know how much he'll negotiate on his listed prices, but sometimes they seem a bit high to me; I can order a lefty Martin, Fender or Gibson (or Taylor if I wanted one) from my local store and get a better price. But he is providing a "mecca" for lefties (along with Jerry's Lefty Guitars in Florida, which seems more competitive price-wise).

Tony, they still have a wide selection of Taylors.

I've bought from Adirondack in years past. Always with good result.

They have a G&L Legacy Tribute that I covet. I want it, but don't need it.

I purchased three guitars from Jimmy over the years. One was at 65% of the manufacturer's retail price, the other two were at 70%.

So those aren't super deep discounts... there are some local dealers (not MF or GC) that will get you close to or at 40% off MSRP...if they have anything (or can order something) you want.

SPG has been praised and hammered many times in this sub-forum.

IMO it comes to actually visiting the store. They have a wide variety of LHGs to try (keep in mind they might not have your Holy Grail model), and that large selection means overhead which means not the best prices. If Must Play It In Person is your general rule, then by all means try to visit SPG. You'll have to try your negotiating skills, and figure out if you can live with the final price.

I made another trip to Southpaws last week to drop off two of my Rickenbackers for a modification and setup. Luthier Jim Hewett is doing the work. He's at Southpaws about twice a week.
