How in the world did Sir Paul get such a great bass sound on the song Come Together?

I think a lot has been written over the years about the gear Paul used on his recordings, but what you don't often see discussed enough is the role his fingers played in getting the tone he achieved.

On that track: Rickenbacker 4001S with tape-wound (probably) strings, neck pickup, using a pick, through a Fender Showman (probably) amp.

The Fender Showman was an insanely loud amp, but I'll bet they used a very good close mic on it in an isolation booth and didn't have the amp cranked way up. Kept the tone nice and clean and punchy.

It's interesting what he's doing in the track, because on the verses, he's just a touch behind the beat.

However, in the choruses and instrumental breaks he pushes the beat pretty hard, almost getting way out ahead of it. I never really noticed that until now.

Sounds like quite heavy palm mute especially on the verses, not so much on the choruses and inst breaks. Oddly, the mute sounds more pronounced on the final mix than isolated.

I disagree about palm muting. There's plenty of sustain there. I think the relatively "dull" tone emphasizing the fundamental comes from the strings, either flats or Rotosound 88 tape-wounds. That and picking near the fingerboard.

Could be some compression there too, with a long attack time to let in the snappy pick attack.

This is the closest answer. Not tape-wounds, though. Flats, most likely, as Paul often said his strings were Long'n'Shiny® ones.

And, I think there was usually quite a bit of compression used, both going onto tape and coming off the tape, for his sound (in later years, certainly).

I am agnostic as to whether that beloved "Abbey Road" era sound is flats or tape-wounds. There are certainly pictures of Paul playing a Ric strung with black tape-wounds (link). Rotosounds are also plausible because they are made in England, and hence presumably were readily available.

Many say that he used Pyramid flats on his Hofner violin bass, but I don't know if he carried that practice over to the Rickenbacker.

I've always suspected this tune was inspiration for the bass on the tune One of These Nights by the Eagles.

They are quite similar.

More of Sir Paul doing some serious bass pickin'! Sounds like there might have been more than one bass track. Certain sections seemlike they might be coming from another channel with some kind of gating or filter.

I'd love to hear an isolated bass track of him on "Old Brown Shoe" if anyone ever finds it!

Play the low D on the E string 10th fret. Slide up to the A 5th on A string 12th fret. F on G string 10th fret. Slide down from D octave on D string 12th fret.

It sounds a lot like a short scale Hofner with flats to my tinnitus-infested auditory sensories.

That’s the way I’ve been playing it for ever. It sounds like Paul is playing the D on the E string, sliding up the E string to the A, to the F on the D string to the D on the A string, sliding down.
