The truly disturbing issue in my mind is that this could happen to anyone.

^Yep. Ironically my wife and I were talking about that yesterday morning before hearing this story. A local story about fake police busting into someone's house brought the scenario to mind.

[“The person who made the phone call took my nephew, her son, two kids’ father,” Hernandez-Caballero said. “How does it feel to be a murderer? I can’t believe people do this on purpose.”]

Put the blame on the caller(s) first.

It's so unfortunate that police are now being called out and ambushed, then add prank hostage and execution calls, this is what happens.

I saw on the news that the swatter was arrested in LA. I hope this loser's disregard for other humans puts him away from society for a really long time.

I'm sorry, but I don't have much appreciation for practical jokes and pranks that psychologically or physically hurt people. Psychopath behavior.

they should change the law so that the SWATTER is charged with murder in the first degree since it was premeditated. This could (maybe) deter others.

We locals are getting the same stories as everyone else. Maybe it's just me but it seems police are quicker on the trigger than they used to be but to be fair, more cops are executed than in the past.

2 separate stories here. The "swatting" and the quick trigger.

The swatter deserves 2 behind the ear and a dumpster.

Appears the caller/swatter has a history of making these calls... why wasn't he dealt with the first time to end this crap?

As far as the cop that took the shot... I wasn't there to see the true situation, but my initial gut feeling is some CYA going on about a F up.

I am not sure more police officers are killed than in the past. I put a link below. Compared to the 70s, the numbers are lower even though the US population has increased.

Jail the swatter, but he was not the one who pulled the trigger on an unarmed man. Like the young drunk shot dead in the hallway, we have cops with hair-triggers killing with the slightest provocation, and facing little to no repercussions. As long as we allow this from our police then it will continue. And as mentioned, it can happen to any of us, anywhere anytime.

"Jail the swatter"

Hopefully for a long time. What he did amounts to domestic terrorism imo.

Here in Tampa everyone and his grandmother is armed. Me, my whole family Even my crazy legally insane bi-polar ex-Army friend has a concealed carry permit.

If I was a LEO I'd be scared out of my mind to have to get the courage every day to face the this. "EVERYONE HAS A WEAPON" is a truism.

So I am not fit to judge this aspect except to say kill the guy who called it in. After a speedy trial of course.

My CC instructor is a ret. Marine, ret. State Police, was instructor/trainer for cadets for about 3.5 years before cancer stopped him.

His expertise was shoot-no-shoot training.

For the nay-sayers, and those that want to condemn officers, do the S-N-S.

I personally have witnessed several, and have not witnessed a successful cadet revolution.
I failed twice.

I'm no longer allowed to watch, and I was never able to watch veteran officers or re-certs.

Terrible thing here. Hard to tell from the recording or video but someone should have held their shot until things were much more clear.

"For the nay-sayers, and those that want to condemn officers, do the S-N-S."

Most of us aren't trained to handle SNS, LEOs presumably are. If the training they receive isn't translating to high scores in a SNS test, maybe it needs some work.

I am reticent to jump to condemnation of a LEO if we don't have all the information. But, the biggest issue for me is that we never get all the information -- these things keep getting swept under the carpet.

We need some confidence that our police force is not riddled with Barney Fifes.

Great post, stratcat.

SNS is such an infinitely fine line. And it seems like society pushes on the that line with shenanigans like “swatting.”
