I have recently turned a cheapo craigslist Squier Strat into a superstrat, using lil killer SC sized HBs and a pre-wired harness, and a 3 DPDT miniswitch pick guard from Guitarfetish.com

First issue I had was that 2 of the pups came with the wrong type of screws/springs.

Then once I got that sorted out, it turns out that they used the wrong taper on the tone pots, so it seems. They are almost tone 'switches' no matter if the pup is tapped or not. Only noticeable tone change is from 0-1.5 or so on the tone knobs. Zero noticeable change above that.

I'm really bummed - I wanted to gig with this guitar on Christmas Eve doing an attempt at Joe Pass-like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", but the tone control was so touchy, I couldn't get that smoove-jazz tone reliably and didn't want to goof around with amp settings. I ended up using my Epiphone Nighthawk Custom Reissue, which has tappable HBs in the neck and tail spots with great gradual tone control.

Other work I did on this Squier seemed to make it a decent player (fret end work, neck pocket work on the body, steel wool work on the back of the neck). Plus it looks pretty sweet now: Black body, Rosewood neck, white pearloid guard, black pups and tone knobs.

I have sent them an e-mail on this topic.

Regarding your tone pot issue: audio taper or linear taper pots usually work fine for tone pots--unless the Ohms rating is way off. The only ground connection on the pot should be through the cap.

I've only made a few orders with GFS, but my customer service experience has all been very positive.

My last purchase (I'll try and make this brief) was one of their P90 size HB's. When I was fitting it to the body, it required taking it in and out a few times. Unbeknownst to me, one of the mounting screws was making contact with the south coil wire and had worn through the insulation causing a short.

I emailed GFS with pics, explained the situation and they immediately sent out a replacement. (and that's posting to Australia!)
They also told me to keep the faulty one since the 'back & forth' plus int'l postage made it too messy.

Happy customer...

Got an e-mail back from them this AM, stating that they have seen the issue before on other pre-wired harnesses, but not so much on the one I ordered. Sent a replacement already. I'll report back once I receive and install it.

I have only purchased some Titanium Barrels for a tele from them but everything was fast and professional. I will be buying some other stuff soon.

They have tons of cool stuff for a song.

All of their stuff is imported.

The quality of some of their items, especially hardware and pickups, is shockingly good.

"Sent a replacement already."

Did GFS do a RA with return shipping label, or just tell you to keep the original?

I don't know yet about an RMA or not for the original harness. I'm itching to play this strat; put just a little bit of elbow grease into it and in my hands it feels great, sustains well, etc. I do wonder if I'm getting the bug of continual upgrading. The tuning machines don't feel so great.

I've bought quite a few things from them and have always found them to answer any concerns. I recently received a neck with a broken nut. They replaced it & told me to keep the first one. They seem to be pretty good folks.

I actually wrote the very first review on Harmony Central years ago for a set of their pickups. I think they were their Strat vintage stagger set.

I’ve done a lot of business with them over the years. Once I had something that needed addressed. It was a Strat pickup set that didn’t have a RWRP middle pickup as advertised. They promptly made it right.

They are good bang for the buck.

Maybe a set of open back Hipshot staggered tuners would do the trick? :)

I have made a number of purchases with them, and all but one item was a pleasant surprise.

Similar to rockstar_not, the Alpha 500K linear tone pots I ordered have almost no impact through 80% of their rotation.

I did order a set of their XGP Custom Taper Split Shaft Pot B500K- Humbucker Tone pots, but have yet to swap those out.

I have bought bodies, set neck body/necks, pickups, hardware and pots from them. Never a complete wired guard. I have been amazed at the quality for the price paid. I'm very please at the PUs compared with anything else on the market, not just for the same price.

They do make some claims of "this fits this" that are not correct but I've always for the most part been pleased.

The one issue I had with their stuff was a Strat pickup many years back: the alnico slugs were uncharged. It had zero magneticity or whatever the term is :o)

So I emailed 'em for an RMA, and they said, "keep it; we'll get another one in the mail to you ASAP." Which they did.

Well, they sent me another harness.

Same issue as the first. Tone knobs act like tone 'switches', muted at 0, full bright tone at about 1.5, and no noticeable difference after that.

I specifically bought from them because of the supposed convenience of buying a pre-wired harness.

This time I paid attention to the tone control pots.

Volume has an A500K marking, both tones have B500K marking.

I'm starting to regret going down this path. What was fun is starting to get the hint of being a hassle.

If this isn't resolved, I'm going to ask for my money back, and just buy a pre-wired guard from 920D with Tex Mex pups, then sell the thing, or maybe just put the original crappy pups/guard back in and unload it. I made it a much better player from the work I did on the neck pocket and fret ends.

If you have an instrument with "good bones" and you've tweaked it into a good player, it would be a shame to throw the baby out with the bathwater IMO.

If you have the ability to do the other stuff you did, buying pickups; pots; switch & guard separately rather than a loaded guard is not much work. (and probably cheaper)

If the wiring stuff is daunting, there's plenty of info on the interwebs, not to mention here!

My vote is to persevere...

What has been the response time you folks have had from Guitar Fetish? My issue is still not resolved. I now want my money back.

My issue was was resolved within a day (and that's with a 14 hour time difference).

If it has been since 21 Jan (your last post) I would say it's slipped through the cracks. Unfortunate, but it happens to the best of 'em.

I'd re-contact, state your case (pleasantly) and I'd bet they would fall all over themselves to make it right. Provide your phone number in the email too.

Also worth checking your junk folder to see if you might have missed a response email.

Mick, I did all of that. I contacted them on February 3rd, then again last week. Pretty disappointing
