...the Metallica documentary from 2004, about what they were doing in 2001-03 trying to record what became "St. Anger". I started thinking it was pretty indulgent, but ended up liking it; made me appreciate them a lot more. Either in the editing or because of what they did get recorded, the "therapist", Phil Towle, came off as a bit of a piece of work. In an interview from a short made in 2004 Lars Uhlrich did say that Towle may have been seen as the villain, which he said was unfair to Towle. Seems that they did need an outside agent, almost like a marriage counselor, to keep them from completely imploding.

The best part IMO is when they hire the incredible Rob Trujillo. The film is basically bookended with the exit of Jason Newsted and then the arrival of Trujillo, which comes across as almost a redemptive moment for the band.

It also shows how close they came to breaking up after James went to rehab.
Towle was doing the best he could, but I think when the album was completed, he was pretty much done, and could have bowed out gracefully...then again, going on the road might have raised MORE issues that could have used some therapy!!!
And a nice segment with Lars and Dave Mustaine trying to fix that burned bridge from 1985(?). And yes, James should have been there.

Oh, and the fan fest with the "bass auditions"! Very cool...not every band would do that!

And, unfortunately, the album doesn't sound any better after seeing the movie!! :)

^ the conversation between Dave Mustaine and Lars Uhlrich was recorded the day after 9/11, which added to the strange
vibe. Mustaine was especially emotional.

That was one of those cringe-inducing movies for me.

Probably more than I really wanted to know about those guys.

"Probably more than I really wanted to know about those guys."

Like the fact that Kirk likes to go jogging to 'clear his mind'???

Jogging is NOT METAL!!! M/

I had forgotten about the 9/11 thing. I'm sure they both probably wanted to cancel, but Mustaine was like, "Come hell or high water, we're GOING to have this conversation!!!"
