One must keep in mind that a current iOS is designed to run best on the current iPhone, and pretty well on the previous generation, once you get two generations behind, an update may not be the best idea; this applies to all Apple products. An iPhone 6 running iOS 11 will not be as efficient, fast, or easy as an iPhone 8 or iPhone X running iOS 11 as the new phones are what iOS 11 is designed for.

It's not necessarily a hardware issue, it's a 100% compatibility issue. I've had the iPhone X running iOS 11 for several weeks and love it.

Most people who have iPhones love them. I love my iPhone 6+.

But I would be the first to admit that the forced ApplePay thing is a pain in the behind.

I cautioned my sons about not updating the IOS on their 5S phones and said the same to my wife on her SE. Oh well.

I recently had to replace an iPhone 6 and opted to go Samsung. With Apple I just had to deal with Apple and some Verizon apps. The new phone has Apps by Verizon, Samsung, and Google.

I've been amazed at how pervasive can be once you set up a google account if you don't go in and turn off everything it wants to track and link.

I predict someday they will be Skynet. LOL

Pretty much.

If they bring back payphones on the side of the highway, maybe I'll go back to landline and ditch the mobile.

It might happen...

For people like me who frequently travel to remote places by themselves, a smart phone can be a lifeline (if'n you got a signal...). That said, I am very close to ditching the whole online thing. I think our global masters make the internet like potato chips in that you get addicted and can't easily put the bag down.

But hey, how bout those Dodgers?

I am a PC user. I have Windows 10, and I figured out how to shut off Cortana... obnoxiously, you have to do a registry edit. They don't put it anywhere on any settings screen.

My beef is that if I buy a device I want it to do the things that *I* want it to do, not emulate whatever alternate reality they put in the TV ads. I'm not a tech hipster. I like that it does some things really well, but I have no desire to be cutting edge. They are tools to me. It isn't like by not using ApplePay I'm a crazy old man keeping cash under his mattress. I'm not a Linux sort of guy because I just don't have that kind of energy, though.

"One must keep in mind that a current iOS is designed to run best on the current iPhone, and pretty well on the previous generation, once you get two generations behind, an update may not be the best idea; this applies to all Apple products. "

I side stepped five or six updates. My phone would download it, give me a low storage warning because the update was about 1.6 GB, then try to automatically install it. I'd turn off the auto install, delete the update and move on with life. The latest update didn't get horrible reviews, so I thought I'd just let it install this time... bad idea.

It is beside the point though... a responsible manufacturer should ensure the life span of their products longer than that, and if it is chumped it should at least not be at the hands of their own software developers. Separate software updates for different models wouldn't be asking too much... it isn't like the product line is THAT big, after all. My phone is less than 2 years old, and very well cared for. I'm not going to go out and buy a new phone every time a manufacturer decides that I should. That's silly.

Some of my battery issues were solved by turning off iCloud... not sure why, but it is what a Google search told me to do and it helped. It is still draining too fast. I may click off bluetooth, but I do use it in my car so I can have the hand's free, which to me is a nice safety device.

You turn bluetooth on when you're using it and off when you're not. The only time I use it on the phone is streaming music in the car. It is a drain to leave it on all the time.

I want to know how you keep from updating the iOS software when in my experience it will force you to update after saying no a couple times.

I was given a work iPhone and never liked it. My personal phones, and my wife's and son's, have always been Samsungs.

As soon as our Verizon contract is up we are going to try Xfinity out. My i7plus battery is also victim to the most recent updates.

Great informative introduction to the "problem" with four differing solutions. I used option one; quick & easy.

PS - This worked only because I received the notification and request to install iOS 11, indicating that had already been downloaded to my phone. My wife's phone had no notification/request yet, and there was no iOS that was evident that I could delete (still using iOS 10). Too late for her iPad - 11 has been installed.

I think some other "preventive" option would be better.

Disable iOS 11

My iPhone is about 7 years old now, and although some of the newer apps don't run on it, I don't have a problem with it.

As I also have an iMac and an iPad, my next phone will almost certainly be an Apple.

Lots of reasons not to support Apple. As an example of a pretty good product, iPod, Apple stopped support for iPod, then iPod updates were not backward compatible, then iPods were discontinued, now if your iPod gets sick or dies you have a very expressive paperweight.

Be careful, Apple return policy is very short. Holiday purchase must be returned by January 8, 2018.

Maybe Apple will get a pulse of their users, maybe by finding threads like this one, and correct some problems. Like the forced ApplePay thing.

I can dream, can't I?
