Looking at local Craigslist for a Jazz bass.

Going to take the fret's out, fill the slots with a standout epoxy, and learn this tune.

To me, to play like Jaco is to approach the bass like a lead guitar.

That's the easy part.

And somehow or another, holding down the bottom.

Just a thought . . . if it's a nice original Fender neck, you might consider buying a fretless neck off ebay or wherever, and keeping the original fretted neck in good shape in storage.

The resale market for fretted basses is a LOT better than the one for fretless!

Apparently, you do not understand what Jaco was all about.

He wasn't all about playing lead guitar on the bass. I suggest Bill Milkowski's book if you want to learn for more.

Not to mention listening to the hundreds (thousands?) of recorded material he was on.

am I the only one a little annoyed by the overdone chorus effect on "A remark you made"?

IMHO it detracts from an otherwise gorgeous sonic painting, kinda like a bed spring twanging.

but then I'm an...

I always remember one of Jaco's last remarks he made... "Can someone just get me a gig?"

Well you know, what's wrong with lead bass anyway
:) ?
Jaco was a(of the many)super talented Bass player, he definitely did his own thing and it seemed to work. Maybe you could say he paved the way for others and developed new way to think about the bass.
