Picked up a used Marsh BFDR. Sounds darned good, but I like messing with stuff. Thinking about JAN Sylvanias, not interested in going the 6L6 route.

New guitars, old amps. Perfect.

The JAN Sylvanias should be fine. I have an original 1965 Deluxe Reverb currently fitted with NOS Marconi Radiotron 6V6GT tubes. I've also used Sylvania and RCA tubes with good results.

If your amp is faithful voltage-wise to the traditional circuit I would recommend setting the bias current between 18 and 22mA. The tubes will be happy and the amp will sound great!

I've got a pair of NOS Marconi 6V6's (same as Roger) in my 1968 DR and I absolutely love them.

I bought them several years ago and they sounded so good, I immediately ordered a backup pair. Still running that original pair and they still sound fabulous.

I've also had Mazda and Ken-Rad 6V6's in it.
Also very good, but there's something special about those Marconi's.

Thanks for the tips. Off brand NOS stuff is the way to go, usually manufactured same places as the big dogs for a fraction of cost. Ordered some Westinghouse 6V6s, appear the same as RCA black plates. Still digging..

The grays are a bit less expensive than the blackplates.

But I really like the way the gray plate GTA's sound.

"NOS RCA 6V6GTA "

But you'll note by reading carefully, that there's only ONE of those tubes available. Which means it's kind of worthless all by itself.

Went by The Amp Shop in WPB and bought 2)RCA 6V6GTAs and 2) JJ 6V6S's. For my money the JJ's smoked both the RCA greys and the Tung-Sol re-issues (which were good). Have a GE 12ax7 in V2.

Still waiting on the Westinghouses..

The JJ 6V6 is built more like a 6L6.

I have plenty of NOS 6V6's and use the Tung Sol "reissues" in my original '65 Deluxe Reverb. They're smoother, when pushed, in that circuit. I use the grey plate RCA 6V6GTA's in my '61 brown Deluxe.

I've built up a nice collection of vintage 6v6's and these are some of my favorites:
IMO Sylvania are incredible tubes. I don't have any of their 6V6's. But I do have a number of their preamp tubes and they're phenomenal.

CBS/Hytrons are also very nice tubes. Their 6V6's can also be a pretty good bargain compared to the cost NOS RCA's. IMO they're as good as RCA's and Tung Sol's. Raytheon tubes can also be good bargains as well, sometimes they're rebranded RCA's.
If you can find them, and not spend a fortune...Brimars. They are as good as people say.

Gigged with the JJ's, almost too clean.. which was uncomfortable for me with a 22w amp. Put the Tung-Sol reissues back in and moved some NOS 12ax7s here and there (2nd & last preamp slots). Liking it better - at home anyway. Gigging tonight.

You can't beat NOS RCA 6V6 GTAs. Plentiful and not that expensive.

Hiya, Jerry! Yeah, I’ll probably end up springing for a pair of black plates. I just got a couple of old Westinghouse’s in the mail, I thought they might be a relabeled something or other… Underwhelming. I also have a pal that has a couple of Sylvanias he’ll sell me.
