We have such a high rate of Melanoma here (highest incidence and mortality in the world AUS & NZ)) that there has been a decades long campaign promoting the use of sunscreen.

Recent research has indicated an rise in vitamin D deficiency, particularly in kids. How's that for irony???

Have any of you been told by your docs how to take oral D? Do you need to take it separately from other drugs?

I think you would need to check the info relating to the respective medicine you are taking to see what cautions or warnings you should heed. For example, a med (statin?) will caution to not take the med with grapefruit juice and not to drink grapefruit juice for “x” number of hours before & after taking the med. I’ve never seen a supplement provide any info beyond daily dose and whether to take with or without a meal.

“ave any of you been told by your docs how to take oral D? Do you need to take it separately from other drugs?“

My doc told me to take 5000 units a day. That was all he said. I usually take it in the morning. Often before I eat. I don’t always eat right away.

009, that’s why I’m curious whether any of the docs said something about it. For example, I take a PPi every day due to a past gastric surgery, it can affect absorption of other drugs and supplements.

Quality is important with respect to supplements. Yes, vitamin D3 is very important...VERY. It has a vital impact on our immune systems. I have depended on it to boost my immune system for a very long time and it appears to really work. I was diagnosed with low D some years back and began taking 5K IU of a quality D3 product and it has apparently made a huge difference in my ability to defend against various viral uglies.

It's actually hard to overdose on D3 as our bodies tend to take what it needs and dump the rest. I try to get sun as much as possible as well as my D3 supplements. With the current flu vaccine being reported to only be 10% effective (another big pharma fail), it is vital IMO to boost the intake of D3, zinc and the C complex as well as vitamin C for most people (but not all). I think of vitamins and minerals as food...herbs are medicinal. Eat well...

In addition to 5000 units of D3, I take;

10 drops grapefruit seed extract
L-Glutamine
A mega probiotic
N-acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
Magnesium
Omega fish oil
Clear fiber

These are all prescribed by my PCP. I have defied her and stopped taking Oregano oil, CoQ10, Melatonin, 5-HTP,

Well, there goes my morning salty dog!"

Well, you'll have to verify that (your med vs. grapefruit juice), but if you're referring to a statin (e.g., Lipitor) I'm pretty sure you should be taking that in the evening. So, enjoy your mornings!

I read something about taking too much D3 was bad for you, so I cut back to a daily 2k gel cap from a 5k one. This is, of course, assuming you are not Vit.D deficient.

OK, here's info from my "go to" supplement info source. Be sure to scroll down, as it sort of looks like a short, incomplete discussion (it's not).

Check this out, too. You'll have to poke around and get familiar with this web site, but it should be helpful. I have a Shortcut for it on my Win7 Desktop, so I must have thought it was good enough to clutter that up further.

"Turns out I was very vitamin D deficient. The acceptable range was 30 - 74 (I forget the units). I was at 9.9.

I started taking 5,000 units of D3 a day. After 3 or 4 days I started to feel better. I’m still not 100% now. But I’m much better than I was. "

I found out my level was bout 10 like yours a couple years ago. My winter depression for a couple years was even worse than usual. I took 50k D2 once a week for a few months, then started 1k a day. After 6 months, my Vitamin D only nudged up to about 12. My body was just not having it.

I started taking D3 5k daily and it finally got up to 30. My migraines became less frequent, as well as my inflammation, and my fasting blood sugar dropped from 103 to 85 or so.

Yet almost every dumb doc I go to and mentioned it before, pratically yells at me and cuts me off as soon as I ask about vitamin D "OHHHHHHHHH EVERYONE IS LOW IN VINTAMIN D" and they waved their hand like its nothing and never tested me for it. One other doc finally did. The others only care about being able to prescribe something. Theres no money in OTC vitamin D.

I was around 10 on the scale, Dr put me on 50,000 units once a week and 5,000 daily. I'm now at 42 and have dropped the 50,000 and still take the 5,000. Been at 42 for the last three tests covering 9 months.

I feel better than I did but I also have other problems.

Canada has a whole different view on OTC supplements than we do in the US, as far as oversight and consumer safety:

"In the United States, dietary supplements are considered to be food products under the Dietary Supplements Health Education Act, so claims may not be made about the use of a dietary supplement to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat or cure a specific disease.

Also, these products are not subject to mandatory review, approval or quality requirements, and do not go through testing for identity, purity or potency of active ingredients. Therefore, they cannot be sold in Canada until they have gone through a proper assessment with Health Canada for safety and efficacy."

Right now I’m thinking that I should look within Canada’s version of eBay for my next supplement purchase.... Thanks for that info.

I asked SWMBO to bring me some home yesterday, so today’s day 1 of 5000/u. Let’s see how it works. I’m holding off on my PPI until two hours later so absorption isn’t affected.

A few years ago my doc had me taking D due to a deficiency, but I stopped taking them at some point.
