Footnote. Ventura County is horse country. I suspect in addition to structure loss the livestock loss will be staggering. Some folks just had time to cut their heard loose and run.

Am I the only one wondering if it's not arson, particularly terrorist arson?

"Am I the only one wondering if it's not arson, particularly terrorist arson?"

Given that most of California seems to be on fire most of the time, what makes you suspect terrorism in this particular instance?

Just found this shot online of the fire that took out my childhood home and every other house on our street. I used to catch the school bus every morning in front of this little strip mall, from 2nd through 12th grade. Our home was there above and to the left, probably already reduced to rubble when this shot was taken.

Heard on the radio last night that the Thomas (Ventura) fire has now consumed 90,000 acres and reached as far north as La Conchita (near the Ventura/Santa Barbara County line).

Prognosis doesn't look good: 50-MPH, Santa Ana winds with 80=MPH gust and warming temperatures today and no rain in sight.

The pictures I've seen here and some others are amazing and truly terrifying. If you are in the area, hope you can stay safe and by all means get out of there if it's even getting close.

Think about when you blow as hard as you can on a fire in your fireplace or woodstove and then...

...multiply that...

News this morning of 40 horses trapped in a barn burned to death. One of the hands said they tried to get them out but the fire was too hot and too fast and too dangerous. He was obviously very upset.

The issue with these types of fires and horses is that they happen too fast. There is no time to react.

When that last hurricane hit S. FL lots of folks trailered their horses north. I know the GA National Fairgrounds in Perry, GA opened up their stables for these folks. These folks had days of notice.

Not so with a wildfire.

They probably have hours at most. Maybe a day.

There was some talk of people just letting their horses run loose to at least give them a better crack at survival than leaving them penned up.

But it occurs to me that turning loose 40 fear-crazed horses at a whack could potentially put fire fighters and others in the area at risk.

Seems like one of those unfortunate situations where there aren't really any good options from which to choose: just a number of bad ones.
