Huge fire started yesterday burned 15 miles toward my town in less that 12 hours. Crazy high winds. It moved so fast last night. No worries though becuse my home 10 miles away and is not in the path at this point. Monitoring though...

Yes. Many evacuations and some lost homes so far. Several friends and coworkers evacuated last night. One of the neighborhoods I used to like in evacuated at 3 am. From my porch this morning the sunrise made the sky was amber red. Ominous stuff.

Boy, those PICs sure bring back vivid memories from my childhood just north of L.A.. We had to evacuate a couple times and came very close to losing our home. Several of my friends weren't so lucky.

Mojo t'those poor folks. When the Santa Anas are driving these conflagrations, the fire fighters are nearly powerless. Hope none of them or the residents are injured or worse before this is finished.

My wife is a UC Santa Barbara alumni. We've revisited SB many times. It is a beautiful place. We pass through Ventura, which is a beautiful region. Sorry to hear this, for those that don't know we are dry and warm fire weather.

Keeping an eye on that one, too. Mrs JAFO and her two sisters are driving from Hemet to Sacramento tomorrow.

Those pics sure are terrible scenes of the fire. I've been in earthquakes, affected by a volcano, and shot at by bad guys, but losing one's home to a fire has got to be about the worst thing short of death.

Mojo to all affected by this.

Update: mandatory evacuations issued one mile from my home. It is smokier than the heaviest Islay whisky I've ever had --ash as thick as snow everywhere. Looks like I'm packing up the dogs and wife and bugging out this morning.

clf, good luck with y'all getting away and, I hope, that your surrounding area escapes the flames. That is one of the fears we left behind when we moved from Idyllwild to the city. It was a beautiful mountain community but the yearly fire risk and the rough winters were getting to be too much to deal with.

Footnote. Ventura County is horse country. I suspect in addition to structure loss the livestock loss will be staggering. Some folks just had time to cut their heard loose and run.

Am I the only one wondering if it's not arson, particularly terrorist arson?

Given that most of California seems to be on fire most of the time, what makes you suspect terrorism in this particular instance?

Just found this shot online of the fire that took out my childhood home and every other house on our street. I used to catch the school bus every morning in front of this little strip mall, from 2nd through 12th grade. Our home was there above and to the left, probably already reduced to rubble when this shot was taken.
