I have a few causes I donate to, and have been known to do the odd spur of the moment online giveaway as well.

I guess these organizations swap lists back and forth, because over time it has got to the point where 9 out of 10 pieces of my snail mail are from groups who want me to save the children, save the whales, save the dogs, help the poor, help the homeless, help the Vets, help the homeless Vets who are poor and own dogs, etc etc ...

Many of the envelopes are thick with stick-on return address labels, calendars, decals, greeting cards and on and on.

I feel like the guy wading through a crush of humanity on a street in Bangladesh, who makes the mistake of giving a few coins to a beggar and is immediately besieged by a tsunami of outstretched hands ...

It's odd, the persistence of some organizations I've never given to, that nevertheless continue to squander their postage budget on me.
Hey guys .... how about "save the trees!"

They do it because direct-mail solicitation works. The cost is probably a small portion of their total take.

Many of these "charities" ultimately contribute to a lavish lifestyle for a few at the top of the organization. A recent case that comes to mind is the Wounded Warrior Project: there was a kerfuffle about that a year or three back.

Choose your charities carefully.
