Skip the museums and go have lunch and craft beer at Austin Beer Garden and Brewery, known locally as The ABGB.

After that, cruise to the east side and go visit Austin Hops and Grain for some more craft beer and a quick tour of the facility.

Museums are for old folks and school groups. There's serious brewskie in that there town!

The Texas museum had a really good Texas musical history exhibit when we were there a few years back. Don't know if it's part of the permanent displays.

Traffic during busy hours has become ghastly, but if you're used to DC, you should be okay.

Last time I was there to visit my daughter I went to the LBJ museum. Outstanding if you were around when he was president and are familiar with him.

Thank you Charlie Macon--the Bullock Museum was a great suggestion. They have a pretty cool exhibit on the Prohibition. The one disappointment was in the Austin City Limits display: no Billy Joe Shaver. Sacrilege!

Regarding "Keep Austin Weird," rest assured I'm doing my Peegoo best.

Last time I was at a craft brew place the beer was 7 bucks for a 12 oz glass.

Never again.

Peegoo, I'm glad you enjoyed it. We'll get our hineys over there again soon, it's been way too long. We've also visited the associated IMAX Theater many times, and have indeed experienced "the rattlesnake terror" of the other theater showing a presentation on Texas.

Oh cool. I clicked on the Bullock Museum link and found this. I've bought many a guitar, amp, bass, microphone, etc... from this guy. We dearly miss his store in Austin, which shut down several years ago:

I did get to Hennig's HOT Music in the early 90s. I have the tee shirt...

We sat in the San Jac bar on 6th Street and listened to a local guy covering All Yer Fav'rit country tunes. The people at the bar were faaaar more entertaining than the entertainment was. But the drinks were poured stiff and everyone had a good time.

Dinner was at Z Tejas. I recommend the catfish tacos; they were amazing.

I haven't been back to Austin for a few years, but the last tIme I was there Ray Hennigs was still open and the old guy himself was still there. Amazingly I didn't buy anything, but my compadre bought an Eric Johnson Strat for less than half the price they go for here in the UK.

I also enjoyed my visit to the Texas State Capital building, as well as some of South Austin's finest bars.

I'd like to think I'll go back some day.

You should! The bar district is a bit more civilized these days; it's not as seedy.

We flew out of San Antonio last night to return to DC.

I'm in front of my hunnie in the TSA PRE rope line, and there was nobody else in the line...until we got to the bag check.

Right in front of me were Lance Bass and his husband (can't recall his name). They were both being shepherded by some A&R chick to make sure they got through security without any glitches.

Good thing it wasn't Willie Nelson, or the marahoochie dogs probably would've alerted and caused a huge ruckus.

Dadgummit, I missed this until too late. Had a gig w/Charlie Pickett at SXSW couple years ago, we ate at Sam's BBQ ("You don't need no teeth to eat my beef"), as soon as we finished we went and got the rest of the band and went back and ate a second supper.

Went into BBQ toxic shock for a few hours afterward but worth it - best brisket of all time!

Mmmmm
