Just recently one of the channels ran an old Andy Griffith episode in which the Mayberry town choir was about to put on a concert. Barney was to sing a solo, but the choir director wasn't really satisfied with Barney's singing. The director overheard the goofball mechanic Gomer Pyle singing the same song in a rich, operatic baritone with a nice, even vibrato, and got Gomer into the choir.

The first time I saw that episode, back in the early 60s, I thought Jim Nabors was lip-synching to someone else's voice. It was a year or two later that I learned that Jim Nabors could actually sing like that.

RIP Jim......"Back Home In Indiana", I listened to him sing this before the Indy 500 for decades.

He played a total goof but was actually a very smart man with many talents.

Ahhh geez. Rest in peach, Jim. I love the Andy Griffith show and now I think Betty Lynn is the only one left alive along with Opie.

Sigh.

Hmmmmm ........ Elvis was another Southern boy who could sing.

I wonder if he could have folded himself into the role of auto mechanic / philosopher, Gomer Pyle as neatly as did Jim Nabors?

Go ahead .... close your eyes and picture The King going, "Goll---ey!"

He hated watching the opening of the show. Most of those guys went to Vietnam and were KIA.

"Quite a contrast between Gomer and Jim the singer."

I remember being **shocked** the first time I saw him sing on the TV. I was just a kid, and had enjoyed Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. RIP.

That was his act when Andy discovered him. He played this shrill hick with an amazing baritone singing voice.

Nabors was actually one of the few to be named an honorary marine corporal by the USMC...true.
