I picture at least half of the FDP membership as looking like Tom Petty.

"I have no reason to doubt any of these women. And some of these guys, including Lauer, are deplorable sleaze bags. I mean, the guy had a button installed under his desk to remotely lock the door without leaving his seat. There’s no legitimate reason to have that."

Some of them are deplorable sleaze bags. Perhaps all. I don't know. I just care that due diligence is done to confirm that fact to the best of their abilities.

It's not as if there haven't been men's lives turned upside down by false accusations. It's rare, but it happens enough that a quick google search yields plenty of results. I don't have any real reason to doubt them, but that doesn't mean I feel their claims should be free from scrutiny. This is serious business here.

Now, add to that the possible target is a guy making 20mil a year, it is at least in the realm of possibility that someone could have nefarious intentions. The network wouldn't miss paying the whale... other employees and prospects move up the chain as a result.

This sort of behavior(button lock?, sending sex toys and dirty notes) is certainly not acceptable at work, though.

As long as due diligence is done, I am fine. I worked in a female dominated office for a bit. I think I was one of 4 men on a floor of 30 people. It was a good time. I didn't do anything I shouldn't have done, but then again they all seemed like imminently reasonable people anyway.

I've never really been aware of Matt Lauer as a celebrity but he does sound like a bit of a d-bag.

Harassment is not cool.

It does seem like it's getting harder to just be a guy though.

Can't just be nice to someone at work without concern for it being misconstrued.

While I understand why and how saying “you look nice” etc. —-could—- be taken the wrong way or blown of proportion...I really think those worries are completely outside reality. You work for a company that poorly run and stupidly managed and get fired for that...get an attorney because you’re in for a big pay off in court.
O’Riley paid $32 million out his own pocket. Let that amount sink in. What on God’s earth could someone have done to realize that a $32 MILLION dollar pay out was the easy way out of trouble? Honestly I’d love to know what he did where THAT became his best choice. My company tried to hire this fool anyway from FOX. Doubt it’s going to happen now even though O’Riley’s salary demands have no doubt shrunk in that last few months.
Charlie Rose walked around his office nude in front of female employees. Beyond harassment...that’s just a crime against all human decency.
Lauer gave sex toys to female coworkers with a note explaining how he wanted them used. I’ve gotten some pretty lousy secret Santa gifts at work...but that’s just a tiny bit over the line. NBC is lying about his firing, as were his co-anchors on the air the other day. It’s been common knowledge for years within the industry. NBC’s been using the phrase “current management” in some of their statements. The crap storm that they were about to face from stories about to be published by the NYT and Variety is the real reason their cash cow got fired.
Lauer, O’Riley, Rose, Weinstein and 99.9% of the rest of us XY chromosome folks are not going to be fired by any sane person or company for saying “That’s a lovely dress you have on today Mrs Cleaver”...but probably will get fired for “Excuse me while I whip this out.” followed up by actually whipping it out.
It’s also just a matter of time before we start hearing stories from men experiencing this from “famous” or powerful women. If you think it’s difficult for women to come forward with their stories...think about all the crap a man would face from other guys after admitting a women did it to them.

"So hey counselor, will you take my harassment case?"

Nope. Saying you look like Tom Petty doesn't imply harassment, its altogether possible that the purported harasser isn't even attracted to Tom Petty, but instead just noticed a resemblance.

If anything, you could try to argue that the statement was defamatory, but:

""Long blond hair, (course it is mostly grey now) Tall and skinny (but with a pot belly) "can't get rid of it" (CRAP) "

Truth is a defense to a defamation claim.

You're out of luck!

"I have witnessed atrocious things from Men."

This is the funny thing -- I haven't. Sure, I've heard plenty of "locker room talk" and seen all manner of frat-boy shenanigans, but actual harassment or sexual predatory behavior in the workplace? Never in my +/- 30 yrs being in & around high tech/Silicon Valley and environs.
Not even once.

daveg those are all very good points.

"What on God’s earth could someone have done to realize that a $32 MILLION dollar pay out was the easy way out of trouble?"

Probably something close to if not criminal.

"It’s also just a matter of time before we start hearing stories from men experiencing this from “famous” or powerful women. If you think it’s difficult for women to come forward with their stories...think about all the crap a man would face from other guys after admitting a women did it to them."

I'm not so sure it's a matter of time. This doesn't fit the narrative of most of the media and our culture and I am wondering if there will be a time when certain women will be truly recognized for their power. It could be a matter of time, but I don't know. Because of the cultural expectations of manhood personified, yes it would be incredibly difficult for a man to come out who has been victimized.

Nothing I've seen will ever top the absolute debauchery I witnessed working in retail for many years while in school...but that was all 100% consensual fun between adults (or near-adults, at times).

Good times.
