A friend just acquired a strat with what the seller said were pickups from a Dick Dale strat, the Custom 50's. I've done a fair bit of reading around to see what I could find out about these, and how to positively ID them.

Apparently they pre-date the CS54's and Fat 50's etc, and featured on a number of models. I found an old thread here which contained the specs, I'll copy just the neck here as an example:

Description: Custom 50's Strat
Part Number: 099-2112-003
Position: Neck
Used On Models: '54 Strat, '54 FMT, Relic '50s, Relic '60s, Dick Dale,
Clarence White, Yamano
Wire: #42 Formvar
Turns: 8,000
Bobbin: Strat
Magnet: Alnico 5 (Beveled)
Polarity: South
Pole Length low E: 11/16
Pole Length A: 11/16
Pole Length D: 23/32
Pole Length G: 23/32
Pole Length B: 5/8
Pole Length high E: 21/32
DC Resistance: 6.06k (+/- .09k)
Appearance Details: Beveled Magnets

And so on, except the resistance of the bridge is given as 6.35K.

The pups I have here measure 5.83K or so across all three pickups. There are no markings. The polepiece heights are identical to the specs above. The polepieces are perfectly bevelled, far better and neater than my CS54's. Wire is copper-coloured, leads are waxed cloth and the 'white' is slightly cream rather than white. The base of each has a slight indentation the same as my CS54's.

They sound great, I can't A/B them with my CS54's as they are aren't in a guitar at the moment. But they sound like a very good Fender or boutique 50's-style pickup. My question is, is there any way to positively ID these? I don't have a meter that can measure inductance but it's on my Christmas list. I'll post a pic or two as well.

The base of the pickups. The composition of the fibreboard and the indentation look like the CS54's.

And the bevels. Beyond these two pics there's not much to see. If there's anything else that will help, let me know and I'll have a look or post pics.

I did a lot of comparing of Custom Shop pickups a number of years ago. If I am recalling everything correctly...

The Custom 50's and Custom 60's sets both included 3 identical pickups. The Custom 60's tended to be beveled and the Custom 50's tended not to be beveled. But it wasn't always the case with regard to the beveling. Custom 60's typically ranged in the 5.7k to 5.8k area, and Custom 50's typically ranged in the 5.9k to 6.0k area.

I recall the early Dick Dale pups as being advertised as Custom 54's, FWIW.

Yes the Dick Dale I remember also using the CS 54's. DC reading 5.9-5.9 and 6.2-4 ish bridge.
