I have an Egnater Rebel 112 cabinet with a stock Celestion 70/80 speaker. I need to upgrade to a better speaker and one that will take 150 watts at 8 ohms. I need to cover a wide range of styles in the band I'm in, from jazz to rock but not metal. The guitar amp will always have a DI to the PA, so the cab is just for on-stage monitoring. I was thinking maybe an Eminence Legend, mostly because it seems very good value, though cost isn't the main consideration.

Eminence Texas Heat covers a lot of ground. If I want a general purpose guitar speaker that’s the one.

Rated at 150w too.

Don't take this the wrong way, but......

Why do you need a 150 watt speaker?
What are you driving it with?

No problem ejm, good question. I just got a new DV Mark EVO 1 amp. It gives 250 watts @ 4 ohms, 150 @ 8 ohms and about 80 watts @ 16 ohms. The Egnater cab is 16 ohms which is OK, but it`s not the best speaker and I`d like a bit more headroom. My other thought was I might get the Boss Katana 212 cab.

I`ll post some thoughts on the EVO 1 when I know it better. I`m impressed so far. Any FDPers following the Katana thread should check this out too.

Can they both be used open/closed back or ported?

The TH works in an open, closed or ported cab.

I loaded a 4x12 with them years ago with excellent results.

You're going to need hearing aids in a very short time if you play that loud.
It don't matter which speaker!

Thanks all. I don't think I'll be playing any louder, just need a good, versatile speaker and headroom for the new amp. But I should maybe check if it sounds better at 16 ohms with the master volume higher than it would be at 8.

Update: I've done some more research and been particularly impressed at the consistently high reviews the Eminence Texas Heat gets. And it's half the price of the Commonwealth, so I've ordered one. Rather than put it in the Egnater cab, I've gone for a new cab from the company which supplies the speakers. They are not expensive, have thick birch ply all round and also get great reviews. Their 112 is slightly bigger than the Egnater cab and can be open or closed back. Arriving tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Update - the new compact cab arrived with the Texas Heat loaded and I`ve started breaking it in. I like it across the full range of DV Mark sounds and it feels more three dimensional than the Egnater cab.I think using 8 ohms rather than 16 was the better option. Loads of headroom as you`d expect. Thanks FDP for the good advice.

Yeah davywhizz, this is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here. I have gleaned quite a bit from it.
