jhwkr, I asked the guy what he wanted for the dog and he said $400. I was happy to pay that. He came with a file of papers and was current on all his shots. He's very healthy.

And you are right, they like to be busy!

I love Aussies.

Find a local agility club and get him started. My wife did that with ours casually once a week and before long she was racking in the blue ribbons.

Not a bad idea, littleuch.

We have many hiking trails around here, and he loves them, just tears them up. Like I said, he's very athletic, with very powerful shoulders and front legs. Very sturdy, a good mountain dog.

He's good off the leash, will run 30-40 yards down the trail or road and stop and turn around and check on me. If I call him, he runs right back.

What a great looking dog! Being cooped up all day must have been torture - you done good.

The herding breeds scare me a little - they’re almost too smart to be pets!

Congrats Ragtop and good job. You truly rescued Luka because that breed is certainly not made to be cooped up inside all day. Ditto what jhawkr and littleuch about the breed. My sister has her young dog in a local agility club and it is certainly worth it. That breed needs a purpose/job and the agility class or daily hikes are perfect. They also need to burn off energy whether it's in a good way or mischievous way! Crazy smart dogs.

I also think that he wore a bark collar when he was in the condo, either due to rules or neighbors that complained.

We've actually had him for several weeks now, and he never barked once until the other day when Mrs. R yelled at me to come look at the deer in the yard. Luka gave one big bark, which startled me and himself too!

And a few days later, somebody rang the doorbell and he barked again. He looked at me like he thought he had done something bad.

He is changing in small ways every day. I actually think his previous environment was so stifling for him that he didn't know he was a dog, and is just now figuring out how to be one.

What a handsome boy! I've always had working breeds. You need to give them a job to do, play with them and all is well. He will bond to you guys well and appreciate his new home. Good one on ya!

Congrats Ragtop.

My daughter shares custody of one of those guys with an old boyfriend and she brings him over often -- he loves me. He's very vocal -- not barking, he just makes a lot of happy sounds when he sees me.

They are fine little dogs.

Here's another photo that shows off his eyes.

He's following me around now, being a pest, wants to go on a hike. I'm waiting for it to warm up a bit and then we'll go.

NSR, this one is not so little. He's 50 lbs.

There are mini-Aussies and full-sized, which range upwards to 70 lbs. or so. Luka is about medium sized for a male in the full-sized category.

I say little because he is compared to my 70 pound Golden Retriever.

Jake is not quite 50, but he's easily 40-45.

Sasha sez hi (link). At 40 lbs, she is in between a mini- and a full size Aussie. They are great dogs if you can handle their limitless energy.

You did a good thing +1.

Sasha is a beauty!

We were on a trail along the river last week and a woman came along walking a female Aussie. She and Luka hit it off, and we let both of them off their leashes to see what they would do. Well, they took off at top speed down the trail, bumping and nipping each other, and then back again. They did this 3 or 4 times until both were out of breath, had a complete blast. Like I said earlier, Luka seems to figuring out how to be a dog, and this was a big step for him. He learned a lot by running with another Aussie.

The lady intends to breed her dog, and was disappointed to learn that Luka has been neutered.

Also, I've been around fast dogs before (Belgian Malinois), but I've never seen a dog that can go from 0-60 as fast as Luka; 3 steps and he's at top speed.
