Heh, heh...

"A couple of years ago, I purchased one of Leftee's castaways. :^) "

Yeah, Leftee and I have had a couple gear transactions as well - always a very satisfied "customer," - hope he was, too.

Well, rats. Now the guitar won't be here till Tuesday. I had to call them and confirm my address since I've moved since I last made a purchase from them - they wanted to make sure it wasn't a bogus sale.

And, they said Fed-Ex only delivers Tuesday - Saturday, so it wouldn't have been arriving on Monday anyway, even though that's what I was originally quoted. ???

Tick, tock, tick, tock...

What did I sell you Richard? I forget.

I miss the SG, Mike.

I remember the Godin. It’s long gone.

Leftee, it was a green Strat Squier that you drop shipped to my cousin’s daughter in New Orleans. She loves it.

Yeah, the Strat you traded me for the SG is long gone, too - don't miss it, as I have my "custom" Warmoth Strats; really hard to top those.

One has an old set of American Standard pups in it that sounds just fantastic; another has the set of Rumpels you (Eric) sold me - also fantastic in a different way, and the third has a set of Bill Lawrence noiseless pickups that sound very good, and serve a different purpose (being noiseless for certain situations).

UPDATE:

Got an e-mail confirmation last night of my order - this says the guitar will arrive TOMORROW, Nov. 11th!!! I'll keep tracking to confirm that, but this is very cool; I'll have more time to check it out than I would on Tuesday...

Keep y'all posted...

They really goofed up - their original projection of Tuesday was correct. I was wondering how it was going to get here that quick (today)...

...so, nothin' to review yet.

Yes, delivered, indeed! The guitar arrived yesterday - I've just been too busy to get around to writing a worthwhile, point by point review - so here goes:

The build of the guitar itself is flawless. The materials I'll give a solid 'B' for an MIK (Korean) build: the body is 3 pieces of "mahogany," the neck is 3 pieces of maple; 5 if you count the two little "tips" just north of the nut on the headstock. The top is maple with a thin laminate of flamed maple over it, very nicely stained (I really do like this color!).

The rosewood fretboard is dark and rich looking - feels great. The frets are medium jumbos and the fretwork is absolutely flawless. The nut slots are well cut, BUT they do need to be lowered just a tad - neck is very straight; could lower the saddles just a bit, but right now you can bend the strings (9-42) without fretting out. But in the middle of the fretboard, the action could stand to be a tad lower.

Tuners feel mid-grade, but work smoothly - guitar stays in tune with mild trem use. The trem itself is very smooth and set up to bend both up and down. The trem arm has an adjustment allen screw on it, so you can give it enough tightness to keep it where you want it.

All of the above gets very high marks. Then we get to the electronics...

The pickups sound pretty good in humbucker mode or in single coil mode when tapped, but it's hard to move back and forth without the hum setting sounding muddy or the single setting sounding bright or "plinky". (The pickups split by lifting up the tone control.)

So, adjust the tone control, right? Here's where PRS totally blew it: they used right-handed audio taper pots and wired them left-handed. So the tone control acts like an "on-off" switch near 1-2 on the dial; the volume knob only starts to make a change from around 4 down to 1.

I have no idea if their USA made lefties suffer from this same problem (someone else who has one please pipe in); but they didn't do their homework on this, and it's unforgiveable on a Korean made instrument that sells for over $800.

So I'll keep it for a few days and decide whether I want to either just rewire the pots so they work right, or change them out (and probably dump the single coil feature) or go whole hog and try different pickups... Yes, it's a worthy platform for mods, but I don't have lots of time to devote to that these days.

The guitar is overall very well made, mine is very light (I chose the lightest one they had listed), so very comfortable on a strap.

But I'm still on the fence about whether I want to keep it and invest that kind of time and money into a guitar that shouldn't have these issues, or just send it back. If I do send it back, I'll tell Sweetwater they need to pass on to PRS - hey, do this lefty thing "right"! If you would, you'd sell more guitars!

Thanks for listening. I've tried to post pics in my profile, but it's asking me to make the files so small, I'm not going to bother - what's up with that?

Great review!

What are your thoughts on the neck profile?

That's all too common.
