FDP Forum / Guitar Mods, Repairs, and Projects / Road Worn 50's Strat Neck + 50's Classic Series Strat Body ...?

Nov 8th, 2017 08:27 PM   Edit   Profile

Title kind of covers it - I'm considering replacing only the maple neck on my 50's Classic Series Stratocaster ... and I was wondering if I could replace it with a Road-Worn 50's Strat maple neck, and expect pretty good results?

I hate to plunge head long into it without consulting some of the finer luthier-craftsman types here (who I enjoy reading on these boards)!

Both those models have the standard Fender size neck pocket and neck heel.
That said, every guitar has its own variances.
The replacement neck could simply drop in, or it may require wee bit of sanding. (to the pocket)

You don't want to have to force the new neck into the pocket. There needs to be a bit of tolerance in the fit to allow for expansion as a result of atmospheric conditions. After all, it is just a piece of wood :^)

It should drop right in with no concerns. The Strat neck pocket is the Strat neck pocket. A Fender Strat neck the same. Setup and adjustment will be required but I seriously doubt if you will have tight/loose issues.

They are much nicer. Are you considering because you've played a Road Worn, or just like the look? If the latter, do play one, you won't look back.

What vomer asked. Why are you considering it?

Is it neck feel?

I don't know what kind of body the 50's Classic has.
Alder? Ash? Multi-ply?
That will still be a major tone factor (as if you didn't know that).

Hey guys - I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on that road-worn 50's neck - but you asked why, so here goes:
#1 - YES ... I have played a half dozen road worns over the years .. and I absolutely love how they feel.
#2 - I have a 50's Classic Series surf green Strat that is one of my two main guitars - and I just am not sure about the neck anymore. For one thing - there's some serious fret wear happening - and I've done a lot of guitar/amp tech things myself, but I've never tackled frets. It sure looks to me like the first three frets need replacing ... but, I just want to get 'er up and running asap!

Well, I've heard it said that part of Leo Fender's modular design idea was that necks would be replaceable if they wore out, so there you go! Perfect opportunity to practice that first re-fret, as well. I'm considering it with a cheap neck I have at home at the moment. Hope you find a good Road Worn.
