Which got me to wondering why we call dollars bucks I have added a link. You get used to words and never question them.

I really like British tv and naturally I wondered why they used the term "quid" as equal to a pound. Well this site says the term is derived from "quid pro quo" which makes sense to me.

I subscribe to the Acorn channel now (recommended by one of you) and I really like it. Any other words terms or sayings that make you curious..?

And why is it called an *apart*ment when everyone is all jammed together in there?

Cecil Adams' column (and Website) called The Straight Dope has answered all these (and other) questions of the universe.

And a Hamburger has no ham in it. (unless you add bacon!)

Why is a portable generator call a generator. Shouldn't it be called an alternator as it produces A/C voltage, alternating current?

This being the case the device in you car that keeps the battery charged should be called a generator (DC voltage) regardless of design.

Tremolo or Vibrato, ask Leo!

“wondering why we call dollars bucks”

I heard it was from back in the fur trade era, a dollar for a deer hide.

It was shortened from "sawbuck" to "buck."

Early U.S. $10 bills had a large X (Roman numeral) on them.

The X resembled the very common device used when bucking a log into sections for firewood,

which is known as a "sawbuck."

Would that make somebody who pounces on other peoples' postings "threadatory"?
