FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Telecasters / 2016 Deluxe Nashville Tele neck question

I have a 2016 DN Tele I picked up slightly used in Jan 2017. Does anyone know if these necks are different in width specifically in the neck pocket? I'm considering replacing it with a rosewood board neck. Or, if any MIM or MIA 22 fret neck would drop right in, that's a good option, too.

I saw a Fender rep refer to these guitars as having a "wider neck" in a Fender video. He was wrong about the fingerboard radius (said it was 13") so I'm wondering, too, if perhaps he was wrong stating that the necks were "wider".

Any confirmation of specs greatly appreciated.

A good place to start is: What are the specs on your neck?

Then, when people chime in we'll start to collect the data.

With Fender necks, "width" refers to the starting width at the nut. Some are wider than others.

The width of the neck at the neck pocket, though, is standard across Fender bodies, because Fender Strat and Tele bodies have neck pockets that are 2 3/16" wide, 3" long, and 5/8" deep.

There are minor variations, however, due to factors like wood drying out over time, thick or thin finishes on the neck, finish in the neck pocket, etc.

The neck should not be super tight against the sides of the neck pocket; there needs to be a little bit of room in there to allow for expansion & contraction of the neck and body. Without that little bit of space, the finish on modern Fenders often cracks in the treble cutaway. This is because poly finishes are brittle--not flexible like the wood.

If the neck won't easily drop into the neck pocket, use 220-grit paper on a small wood block to carefully remove dimension from the sides of the neck pocket in the body. Never sand the neck itself to get it to fit.

As Peeg says, the pocket area dimensions are very standardized and haven't changed in decades.

Another handy fact is that Fender guitar necks are always 1 inch max thickness (not including the fret height) at the heel, regardless of the back contour or thickness of the playing area of the neck, or of the fingerboard radius.
