I've been riding the same 1977 KZ400 for the past 18 years. Rented a bike up in Alaska last year, did some really fun touring up there, and have had the itch to do some longer rides around home. There are tons of fireroads and fun roads about an hour away in the Appalachians but getting there involves highway riding.

The KZ is fairly well-kept but despite best efforts to keep it maintained something invariably happens with the fueling, valves, forks etc and turns a 36hp bike that'll do 80mph comfortably into a 20 hp bike struggling to do 60.. Last week planned to go up to the mountains for a day and the carbs got clogged.. final straw.

I'm gonna keep the old bike and restore it but got my wife to drop me off at the local dealer today and got a good deal on a '13 Suzuki V-strom 650. Had checked out the bike online and basically knew it was what I wanted.

Went on three local rides today and love it! Definitely not as "cool" as the KZ but very practical and seems to do everything well (which is the point of the bike.) Also very fun banging through the first few gears. Same engine as the SV650 sport bike.

Did 8 hours in the saddle last Sunday up the Cherohala Skyway and back down through Western NC and 11-64.

Starting to get the feel for the turn-in and throttle control of the new bike, which is definitely a lot different from the old one.

Some beautiful scenery this time of year as well.
