For years I had repro P knobs on my '70, and I didn't like them because they were too shiny and didn't look right. So I bought a 70's set off eBay (€22, about $26).

Seems like a waste of money just to dull a couple of shiny knobs, right? But what a difference.

It's mainly the mass. "Real" 70s P knobs are 2-3 times heavier than repro. They are really heavy, and as a consequence, they roll so much easier.

So, assuming my '77 J will get 3 of those soon, Jaco style, are there repro P-type knobs that weigh like the old ones?

those

Exactly. Chrome plated brass, I think.

Chrome- or nickel-plated flat-top solid brass knobs are easy to find, but it sounds like you want aged or reliced ones.

Also the new ones have finer or tighter knurling, and I prefer the older knurling.

I just noticed how heavy feeling the lower profile "dome" style knobs are that came on my new Nash "52 P" - love the feel of them
