They're over in a minute.

I was getting a few groceries at Walmart tonight, when I noticed they were packing up the Halloween items.

When I said "Halloween's over?", the girl made a show of looking at her watch and said "Christmas goes up at Midnight".

You look forward to something all year long, and then it's over just like that.

(Christmas is 54 days away. Just sayin')

I read the other day that Target is not going to put up Christmas decorations/displays in their stores until after Thanksgiving. I applaud that move.

Holidays have been more about making money on them than actually celebrating them, if you ask me. It's what has pretty much turned me off from celebrating any of them anymore.

I love Christmas time, but the one thing that bugs me is that the Hallmark channel stops playing Frasier reruns and starts playing those cheesy made for TV Christmas feel-good movies.....

two months before Christmas!!

Ugh.

That's the way it always was when I was young. And the way it should be. Last week, watching the news, they were at a local Halloween Costume store selling out fast and interviewing disappointed kids. Back to the studio: talking head said "Oh well, now to get ready for Christmas". WTF! I guess Thanksgiving no longer exists.

What stores and marketing people do do not prevent me some celebrating holidays. (That's right, I said do do!)

Seriously, don't let yourself be manipulated! Celebrate or don't celebrate because it's what YOU want to do!

If the retail stores don't make it at Christmas then they don't make it at all. A longer season helps them a lot.

It's all about the Benjamins.

I love to drag out every minute of the end of year holidays. I’ve started listening to Christmas music already.

It’s a concious effort to get the most out of the time.

I remember the store I worked at in 1979 was one of the first to roll Christmas stuff out on Halloween. It was scandalous at the time.

It’s all about who gets their stuff out first to capture the bucks before anyone else.

I celebrate every holiday on my own terms. What retailers do has no bearing on me at all.

Be strong, brother. Resist the marketing wank!

The holidays are not associated with marketing, for me anyways. I do like to get an early start on Christmas though. I don't make gifts for everyone on my list but I do make a lot of stuff and like to have it wrapped up before Christmas so I don't have to stress about it. The loom I'm making for my wife will be finished in another 2 maybe 3 hours, not counting the finishing.

I've already started shelling pecans for the pies I make for Thanksgiving. It's a big family so I need to make a few. They don't last the evening.

I spend the whole year keeping my eyes open for gifts that are perfect, I hit a lot of flea markets, thrift stores and antique malls and shops, mostly looking for antique tools. Occasionally I'll find a perfect gift for a friend who isn't on the Christmas list but if it's perfect and not expensive I'll get for them.

Except for computers, and some assorted gadgets my head is mostly back in the 18th and 19th century.

Just one corner of my lifving room.

That’s how I feel. Though I’m not religious and I don’t make it all about the “true” meaning, I also don’t make it all about money. Driving around to look at people’s displays, Rockefeller Center, Christmas music, are all free.

My daughter is 10 and claims to still believe, I think she is playing along at this point. But as long as she is, we will too, and after that she’ll hopefully be like us and still be willing to celebrate the spirit of it.

As far as stores and advertising go, well duh, they are stores. They have to try to make as much money as possible, that’s how they stay in business. They aren’t trying to manipulate you any more than they always do, they just have a different way to go about it. Stores advertise and display stuff all year long, and a ton of research and work goes into how to best manipulate buyers into buying. Christmas basically just makes their job easier.

I don’t understand why that is upsetting. Do like you always do, buy stuff when and where you want to. Or is it that you think that you’ll be less stalwart because of green decorations?

"They're over in a minute."

Yep.

I've watched the neighbor a couple doors down the last few years. Every Halloween they put up a huge display with elaborate scenes laid out, music playing, and this year someone was in costume, sitting in the middle of it all.

As soon as the kids stop coming, they're out there tearing it all apart and there is no evidence that anything was there as folks drive by on the morning commute.

I forgot to check last night, but that tear-down can be a show within the show. (;^D)

It helps that we don’t have cable tv, etc, in the house. We’re not inundated with holiday marketing. It’s a very nice bubble we live in. :-)

We could always go with Arbor Day. You plant that oak tree seed and then you're on pins and needles for the next 40 years, watching it grow.

I planted a Weeping Willow tree at my parents house when I was about 7.

Over the years, it grew up to be just as huge as you would expect.

One day, I had the bright idea to go take a picture of it.

The new occupants had cut it down.
