FDP Forum / Performer's Corner / More bass notes: bari or 7-string?

Oct 31st, 2017 09:35 AM   Edit   Profile

I play guitar in a duo with a singer. I like to play bass lines with my chords, or sometimes bass lines alone as a variation. Looking for lower bass notes for our show, and I'd really rather not deal with an octave or pitch-shift pedal, good as they are these days.

Anybody have solo/duo experience either with a baritone guitar or a 7-string? I've tried both in a store, and the jury is still out; both have pluses and minuses.

I have both and would probably steer you toward the Baritone.

7-string guitars require a different way of thinking, whereas the Bari just requires playing a different position.

Honestly, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the pedal.

Agreed! A pedal would allow you to get the low bass you want, and then switch back to guitar with the tap of a toe. Way more versatile than pigeonholing yourself to a specific instrument.

Thanks for the replies. Something to consider, although I would hate to lengthen my current 15-minute gig setup/soundcheck routine.

Toying with the idea of stringing a dreadnought with 13s, then tuning down to D or even C. Key transposition comes pretty naturally to me, fortunately. I will report back if I do this...
