If we are talking Amsterdam, the last few times we've been we've had a meal at the Sea Palace, a large, floating Chinese restaurant (link below). A boat tour of the canals is always good and at this time of year the after dark trips are a different experience to going in daylight. Also check out what gigs are on at the Paradiso - a legendary old rock venue - we saw Gregg Allman there on our last visit.

Thanks for the tips---- my father in law is from Amsterdam-
His late father had a building named after him---
See link below----
what I really want to do is rent one of the boat homes on the canals for 6 months or so and really try to get to know the place.....

We hired a houseboat on the river Amstel on our last visit and it was great. The riverside road is called Amsteldijk. We thought the canals are too narrow and noisy and the boats were much smaller than what we had for the same price. We were ten minutes walk from the city centre - less by tram - and the river is very wide there.
