I love guitars

and things that fly

I put this here although it could've gone in Moe's*

If you live anywhere near Georgia (or even if not) and you need to stop (I often do) there is no one better IMO than Southeast Guitar Repair in Buford, Ga.

Barrett Culpepper has setup & repaired instruments for many big names around (not important) but does the same quality work for little guys like me (very important).

I know a lot of you do your own stuff as do I but sometimes we need to stop and when we do it's nice to trust someone with our babies.

*mods, please move if necessary

They used to be just down the road from my sister's house in Lawrenceville. Nice to hear business is good and they needed more space!

I've ventured into the deep end of the pool out of necessity in recent years. Back in Detroit (Ferndale actually) was my magic man, Mike Koontz. Don't know if he's still in business but the fret leveling he did on one of my Strats must have involved some kind of voodoo. I've yet to play a guitar that feels as good, even all these years later.

It makes me wonder if the likes of him will fade as they bench their tools for good.

There is much to be said about the magic that some luthiers possess. I want that magic but I know that I will never have it.

One the other hand, when you have a shed load of guitars and can do without one of them for a period of time you can learn. I have decided to smash all of my tools and guitars and will post the event on my YT channel. Learning seems to be beyond me.

As a professional I need to confess that sometimes we get really lucky. You get the right guitar with the right problems and it seems as though you've performed a miracle. This has happened quite a few times but I don't feel as though I'm any more special than any other tech who has worked hard and long to develop their skills. I try to do my best every time and I respect the hard earned money my clients part with to pay for my time.

Some guitars are just going to be better than others. Both good and bad guitars happen. But its awesome to get a great result -- its a good buzz --- the best.

"You get the right guitar with the right problems and it seems as though you've performed a miracle."

In my business this is also the case.

Being a professional in my field I can do quite a bit that other's with less training and experience might not, but people start talking about their particular results as though I am god of all the world at what I do.

Sadly, not every job is going to yield awesome, incredible results.

As with guitar set-up, what I do has a lot to do with knowing what to do, what not to do and the proper order of doing it.

It ain't rocket science, but does require some knowledge and skill.

When I picked up my Strat from Mr. Koontz he told me he fought with it long and hard the night before. He cautiously told me that there likely won't be any more fret work that can be done since he worked the vintage frets to their maximum. Being a luthier that the pros seek out, I'm assuming this meant he went the extra mile and radiused the frets in some manner. I've never played a vintage spec'd neck that just doesn't choke somewhere.

When skilled people lean into their work a little harder than usual, it's there that IMO the "magic" happens.
