My former bass player from a couple of years ago contacted me out of the blue to offer me a one-off gig next month. The fee was almost 10x what I usually make from normal cover band gigs, so I checked the diary, realised we were booked that night and politely turned it down.

Tell me I done good?

;-)

Doesn't your present band provide sick days? Personal days?! Time off for good behavior!?

Yup - you did the right thing. Even if the gig already scheduled was a free one, honoring a previous commitment shows integrity. Turning down a golden opportunity is hard to take sometimes but in a case like this you acted in a professional manner and that's what gives you a solid reputation and what gets you hired again in the future.

So there's no chance to change dates on the first gig? No chance to have a stand-in for you?

You did the right thing if you can't accommodate the conflict. If you play music for a living then it would be tough to turn down, but I understand why you did.

Thanks guys.

Sometimes you just have to "do the right thing". ;-)

Slim chance of getting the original gig date changed, no chance they'd do the gig without me. I've only missed one gig with this band in 10 years, and when I asked how it went they said "Never again"

If the pay is 10x more, could you cancel the first gig, pay your mates their rate and still come out ahead?

I'd have tried to find a way to make it work while satisfying all parties.

if not then go ahead w/the orig gig.
but no fault to you at all, you did what you felt was right.
