After weeks of comparison videos and sound samples of small, portable Bluetooth speakers for personal listening of various popular makes, I finally got the JBL FLIP 4 about two months back and couldn't be happier! Its perfect for personal listening as well as for background music for barbecue and beer sessions and more intimate social evenings with friends at home.

It's not bass heavy like the Bose. I love its sound which is an equal mix of all the frequencies in just the right amounts. Thought the highs were a bit accentuated at first and things like the hi-hat sounded a bit too trebly but then I found a simple DIY solution on youtube to correct that which included opening up the mesh cover and putting a small piece of fleece cloth over the speakers (very simple and effective). Also not many people know this but these JBL's (the Charge and the Flips) has a hidden bass boost mode which is activated by pressing the volume minus button and the bluetooth button simultaneously for about ten seconds which activtes the bass mode and boosts the bottom end significantly. I don't know why JBL don't mention this in any of their manuals. So for those who diss the JBL's as going overboard with the high frequencies should definitely try these simple fixes out. The mids highlights vocals and wind instruments like sax and trumpets very well.

I had the opportunity to do a comparison with a bigger more acclaimed BOSE Soundlink III which is 200$ more than the Flip 4 actually sounded better to me after that mod and activating the bass mode! Seriously!

Very portable, rugged and waterproof I even took my Flip 4 to a safari in Tanzania few weeks ago and it held its own at evening campfire sessions with other safari goers in the middle of the Serengeti and on sailboat cruises in Zanzibar!

For anyone looking for a decent Bluetooth speaker for under 100 $ I couldn't recommend the JBL Flip 4 more! Go get one and thank me later!

I bought a JBL Charge 3 and was so impressed I bought 2 more.
Then I lucked into a freebie so I have 4
I can pair them and fill multiple rooms w/ sound.
The 3 I bought were around $100 ea
These things are great

jazzguy you just press the volume down and bluetooth button at the same time for about ten seconds to turn it off and back on again.

I'm thinking JBL didn't mention the bass boost because it probably leads to a lot of blown speakers.

I'm playing mine with the bass boost on at moderate to loud volumes quite frequently. No issues with the speakers so far.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

The most impressive BlueTooth player I've ever heard was the one that Mac-Apple made.
They have long since been made but if you ever heard it you would be an instant in instant love!
It had so much fidelity and volume to boot.
To date, this has been the best sounding unit I have ever heard. It is what I gauge all other self-contained BlueTooth speaker systems by. It had a docking station for your IPod and was BlueTooth capable.
