Just picked up a Nashville Deluxe Tele, I'm a long time player but this is my first experience with noiseless pups. I'm curious as were these recently redesigned as they sound nothing like the reviews about them. Most reviews say they're dull and don't have any sparkle. Man these pups sparkle and spank like nobodies business so are these 4th generation or did Fender do this with pots and caps.

I've been using VNs for around the last 10 years. I have them in a Modern player Tele and a Squier CV strat. They sound great to me. I also use the Hot Noiseless which I have in an American Standard Strat.

Copied from a review I found on the internet regarding N3s- "According to Fender’s promotional material the N3 Noiseless pickup has an improved stacked-coil design and are specially tailored for each Stratocaster pickup position. It also represents a return to the warmth and clarity of Alnico magnets. Also the type of alnico magnets used is tailored to each specific pickup position. The bridge pickup uses Alnico V for power and warmth as well as the signature snap and spank of the classic Stratocaster bridge pickup. The middle N3 pickup uses Alnico II to give the pickup it’s signature sweetness and sparkle. The neck pickup uses Alnico III to give it it’s fullness without undue magnetic string pull."

Vintage Noiseless are ALNICO II. From Fender Australia's website (because I can't access the US website):

Vintage Noiseless™ Strat pickups produce all the brilliant clarity, definition and harmonic attributes of vintage single-coil Strat tone without the hum. Get the prized early Stratocaster tone with modern circuitry and craftsmanship.

"Tonal Characteristics:
Polysol-coated magnet wire
Staggered hand-bevelled pole pieces deliver smooth, balanced tone across every string
Alnico 2 magnets create complex harmonics with warmer attack and less-aggressive midrange"

Someone may be able to chime in about N4 pups. A quick search didn't yield much.

I have a set of VNs and a set of N3s. Tony F, I agree the VNs sparkle and spank. I'm on my second set. The first was fitted to an ash bodied Strat, I really liked 'em although they did sound a bit brittle (probably because of the ash and they were set rather high). I got rid of that guitar because it always felt overly stiff no matter what I did. I missed the VNs though and eventually purchased a Deluxe Roadhouse Strat and the pups have all the spank and sparkle but are smoother and less brittle than the previous set. Absolutely love 'em even more, great clean and overdriven.

I also have an American Deluxe Strat fitted with OEM N3s. Haven't played it for a while so relying on memory but the pups certainly don't spank and sparkle like the VNs. They are softer sounding and not quite vintage, more modern sounding I guess. I like them too but probably not quite as much as the VNs because I seem to play the Deluxe Roadhouse more.

Edited to add link because it gives a reasonable description of VN tone:

I just found out that my deluxe tele has 1 meg pots for the VN pups to have more sparkle. Everything sounds great except I can't roll the volume off even a little without all the highs going away. Is that the pot of the pup?

Hey Tony try and find the tone bleed circuit to add to your volume pot and this will help with retaining the highs when rolling back your volume pot. I find the 1 meg ohm pot to be very bright but if it is working for you then the thing to do is the treble bleed circuit.
There are a few variations of the cap and resistor combinations, but you can try a few of them by running some wire leads from the volume pot connections, don't remember the exact points to go to, but this will allow you to experiment before committing to the right combination and making a permanent install.
