It was a simpler and gentler time. Imagine your summer on your bike tooling around town, half naked in cutoffs and no shirt.

Now, a kid is programmed to adulthood that helmets, pads, colors are all to be worn while biking outside the house, or to any destination, while cars have become safer and people drive better.

We didn't have video games or personal tv's in our room. We had no pads, no phones, no nothing. We invented play, we invented characters to confront.

We didn't shoot the bad guy and reboot. In a way reality has been altered in a bad way for many who when once experience life for real, cannot deal.

I liked it better when I was a scraped up kid...

Actually, I had both a TV and personal phone in my room by the time I was 16, maybe 15 but I get your point.

I'd rather be 19 today than 50 as I am right now. When you're 19, every day is an adventure. Right now at least for me, every day is Groundhog's Day like the movie. Same routine.

I think the lack of electronic "babysitters" when we were growing up is so much different now so kids are just too knowledgeable about things that we weren't burdened with as kids. We had to manufacture our own entertainment with a rock and a stick etc.
Who knows what kids worry about today when they are exposed to so much info 24/7.
I think that going to hell in a hand basket is a bit harsh. It's just that we are bombarded with information constantly and it's not always accurate or even meant to be.
A lot of stuff is just spin on actual events and it's difficult to differentiate one from the other often. You can't blame people for having opposing views when they are exposed to editorialized content on social media which doesn't have the restraints on it that journalism has traditionally had.
As far as people doing heinous things ....thats been with us forever. There have always been people with no compassion and willing to kill someone else just on a whim. Guns ,cars, trucks, bombs have all been used for this and the list will get bigger with each new invention we see.
So we are looking for an answer to why? Or to place blame to make sense of it all. Sometimes there isn't a reason....It's just that all humans are wired a bit different.

I don't think we're going down the tube we're just getting more global and less individual in our interactions with others. This may be insulating us from each other.
We might be better off to unplug a bit rather than try to understand everything.

Kids, I don't know what's wrong with these kids today
Kids, who can understand anything they say?
Kids, they are disobedient, disrespectful oafs
Noisy, crazy, sloppy, lazy, loafers
And while we're on the subject

Kids, you can talk and talk till your face is blue
Kids, but they still do just what they want to do
Why can't they be like we were, perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?

I think going to hell in a hand basket fits the world we live in now and has for some time now.

When I walk all I see are people on cell phones completely detached from what's going on around them.

Buildings with gates all around for security and companies trying to sell you more security. Schools with metal detectors. Young people setting up tents all along the sidewalks.

I was never one who cared to watch TV other than a few shows. We never locked our doors let alone finding the need to even think of gates. In school we might need a hall pass. As some one else said we invented things to do.

I spent hours waiting for a new song to come on the radio so I could learn it and spent hours after school playing my guitar and then it was a garage band.

With the computers and all the new technology people sit on their rear and hours fly by.

I didn't own one until 2000 and I don't post much because it's not like people face to face, it's more an illusion.

Life has become one enormous box store and the media a fluff show. Next month I'll be 69. If anyone told me decades ago this would be the future I would live in I would have thought them insane.

Harrison had it right, brain washed.

"...when the last time you've seen a bunch of kids playing a game of baseball/football,. or anything in your neighborhood?"

Actually, a couple days ago.
I see it all the time in the 2 back yards that border mine.
And my kids did the same when they were growing up. So did their friends.

I really don't think it's not as bad out there as some folks would have you believe.

And to answer the original question - No.

I watched the CNN series on the 60's, 70's, and 80's recently (on Netflix) and I was reminded that the world has always been pretty screwed up with all sorts of horrors and stresses.

With social media and the 24/7 "news" providers, we now get all that stuff thrown in our faces - early and often. Some of it is even accurate. (;^D)
The trick, these days, is to properly gather and filter all the "information" we get from all those sources.

So, things are different. I don't know that they're worse. Some are, some aren't.

I still look forward to every day.

It's always been a complaint. I'm sure in Ancient Greece Socrates went around complaining the current generation of Hopplites were a bunch of wimps and back in the day when he fought in the Phalanx that was 'real man fighting'.

I think it's what got him the Hemlock cocktail.
