I am a huge fan, consider TP & Heartbreakers one of America's greatest rock bands, and I am crushed by this news. Big, big, bummer.

Sad surprise.

Enjoyed his music a lot and always enjoyed his music and playing his tunes as covers over the years.

Shocked. Very sad news. Love some of those old tunes and recordings. They are as much the fabric of America's rock history as anyone.

Let's hold back on RIPs; latest bulletin is he is in the hospital and might still be alive. (CBS News, citing LAPD; 3:59 PM)

What a loss!

Our daughter, who is 31, loved his music, saw him 4 times. She's very saddened.

Very sad and totally unexpected news.

I was rehearsing with my band tonight when our drummer checked his phone and broke the news. We jammed Petty songs for the rest of the session.

I saw his first UK tour in 1977(?) and his second in 1992(?). Loved his debut album, and liked most everything I heard by him after that. I think he'll be considered one of the all time greats.

:-(

Yeah, this is some weird reporting. Wikipedia, TMZ, CBS, Rolling Stone and others all had him dead. Ya know, all the reputable sources...

Latest I can figure is he had a DNR, was pulled from life support but hasn't formally expired yet.

Can't say I liked his music especially his singing, though they said that about Dylan too.
That said it's sad to see anyone striken whether a stranger down the street or a famous artist.

He's not dead yet. The initial reports were garbled and inaccurate. Say a prayer.

I'd expect the likes of TMZ to muck this up but CBS news?
Jeez, who can you trust?
Walter Cronkite would not approve.

The Rolling Stone article has his own manager reporting that he has indeed died with his family and band members at his side in the hospital...???

What gives?

An official announcement was just made by his longtime manager Tony Dimitriades. He is indeed deceased.

Apparently the police were the source of the earlier inaccurate info. RIP, Mr. Petty - you will be missed.
