I found this this morning on my start page. It was in a bio of Gene Autry, the singing cowboy. He wrote it for all his young fans who listened to him on the radio.
Words to live by.

The Cowboy Code

1.The Cowboy must never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage.

2.He must never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him.

3.He must always tell the truth.

4.He must be gentle with children, the elderly, and animals.

5.He must not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas.

6.He must help people in distress.

7.He must be a good worker.

8.He must keep himself clean in thought, speech, action, and personal habits.

9.He must respect women, parents, and his nation's laws.

10.The Cowboy is a patriot.

It's a nice code for youngsters and reminds me of Boy Scouts at their best. But I must say, in the real world, shooting first is the key to winning a gunfight!

Hmmmm ... nothing in there about shooting the bad guy's gun out of his hand.

Also noted: ...."he must respect his nation's laws."
Apparently Gene was way ahead of his time, advocating for cowboys of all nations, not just the USA.

Perhaps Gene Autry and Gene Roddenberry were brothers, or at least shared some of the same (ahem) Genes.

Yeah, I might modify #1 to "If you have to shoot, shoot first".

I've heard of the code but there is also something called "The Cowboy Way". Being from Texas I see the code as being an unspoken thing. The cowboy way applies to drugstore cowboys who want to be or act like cowboys but have to really work at it. I've worn boots, Wranglers and hats most of my life but I'm no real cowboy. The only real cowboys are the cowboys who work on ranches and live the life. I can spot a fake cowboy a mile away. Hey Pardner!

Real cowboys smell. And they don't care. It's the smell of money. And life.
