"The myth of the deterrent factor of a racking shotgun...is just that.
DO NOT RELY ON IT.
Someone has to know what it is, and react like YOU want in the worst of situations."

For it to be effective the person has to hear it. These days, they're probably not paying attention and are texting during the break-in, or couldn't hear it because they have their ear buds in.

"I beg to differ: it worked quite well for me once. I will agree however, that it's foolhardy to assume it will work every time, or even most of the time. "

You were fortunate.

In planning against the terrible, one does not plan for best case.

The chance of a misload or hangup or other problem under stress doesn't go away on that chambering either.

If a person is not deterred by the physical sight of a determined human with a shotgun (or other firearm), racking a round is not likely to up the ante or be a savior.

Confronted with a shoot/don't shoot scenario, I'd rather be focused on command of the situation and assessing continuing threat as my sole concern at the moment versus having "load this damn thing" on the equation, plus "did moron react to loading same" slowing down my game.
