Guess it's just a matter of the numbers, you live long enough you will outlive some of the people you know and care about. 2 pretty close friends gone this year and a third one today. I don't have that many to begin with. Add in some of my favorite musicians and artists who have also "left the building"...whew. I suppose as they say, it beats the alternative.

When Amanda Blake (Gunsmoke's Miss Kitty) died in 1989 I clipped her obit from the paper. For some reason this became a "thing" and since then I have maintained a file of obituary clippings that include actors, musicians, writers, scientists, infamous people, oddball celebrities (Tiny Tim) ... the list goes on.

It began as a single file folder, but over the years expanded to those big 11x14 inch hollow books with the hinged covers. Those books now take up the whole top row of a book shelf in my den: many hundreds of lives celebrated and deaths chronicled.

People I have known personally I memorialize in my daily journal. Lots of cops I worked with are dying these days, and the reunion luncheons get smaller every year.

But like Chris said .... yep ... glad I'm still planting daisies instead of pushing them up from the other side.

"It's not for sissies"

It's sobering, that moment you realize this isn't just a "funny-haha" quip.

This +1:

"... I deleted 2 contacts from my phone in the past month..."

For some odd reason I cannot bring myself to remove these folks from my phone contacts or FB friends list. I guess it keeps their memory with me.

I am Almost the oldest one in my immediate family but there is a Silver Lining: Stuff that used to piss me off for days on end now (mostly) rolls off my back; guess they call that "mellow"?
AND.....i'm showing a surprising amount of maturity when it comes to GAS !!
.......Just saying.

" Stuff that used to piss me off for days on end now (mostly) rolls off my back"

Yeah I'm finding that old saying "Don't sweat the small stuff...and it's all small stuff" is becoming my outlook on life.

If you are still alive and at least relatively healthy, the rest is mostly "small stuff".

But in perspective, I was 68 last year. It was a spooky birthday as it was the age my dad died.

It came and went and my thoughts were, if medicine had been what it is today in 1972 , he may have still been around..most likely not, but his life would have been much more quality.

I'm stickin around till I'm not.

Life is like a train ride. Suddenly you wake up and find yourself riding along with your mom and dad. As the miles slip buy others join the train and sit close to you some move around the train dropping in from time to time to check on you. Once in a while you get up and do the same. At some point your parents depart the train. As you ride the train you will eventually get off too. If you've lived a good life those that continue to ride along will remember you and keep you in their heart.
