I think I'd like to pick up an RG, preferably with a standard paint job and pickguard (nothing with fancy wood and stain, etc.). I like the looks of the RG450DX and the RG655M. There's a significant price difference, of course!

I'm no gear snob, but how do you feel about the upcharge for the Premium line? I know the craftsmanship is better, but is the bridge that much better? That's a big concern.

I have a standard, boring RGKP6.

Black, built-in gain circuit, and Korg Kaoss Pad. :)

It's simple, but so am I!

I'm an Ibanez FanBoy. For context I have an RG350DXZ, an S670QM and a Hermen Li EGEN18 (a tweaked S Series to Hermen's specs).

The RG350 and S670 have Edge Zero II bridges and the EGEN18 has an Edge Zero bridge. You would expect that the EGEN would have a better quality bridge because it's right up there as a prestige quality Japanese build guitar. From research, the only difference is the Edge Zero has an adjustment tool attached that the Zero II doesn't have. Both types of bridges stay in tune EXTREMELY well, even when there is temperature changes that affect my other non-locking trems. They take abuse well and are stable, and come back to pitch perfectly, every time.

The RG665M has an Edge Tremolo, same as what is fitted to the high-end Steve Vai signature models. the Edge Tremolo is, from what research has told me, a copy of the original Floyd Rose design. The RG450 has what is simply called the Double Locking Tremolo, which seems to be a downgrade from the RG350's Edge Zero II bridge.

I've read a whole bunch of negatives about all the Ibanez bridges but have found that they are reliable, return to pitch and retain turning even with heavy abuse. The Edge series (Edge, Edge Zero, Edge Zero II) are used across a range of guitars from Standard series, Prestige, Premium and Artist series. I'd certainly recommend the RG655M over the RG450 based on the bridge alone because the 450's appears to be a downgraded no-name model that, quite frankly after looking at pictures, reeks of cheap.

Edit- I'm probably in a minority but I like the Quantum pups (as fitted to the RG450, and incidentally, my RG350) and find them very useful for a wide range of stuff. The RG655M is fitted with what I consider an awesome set of DiMarzios so this may sway you. If value for money is the driving factor, I'd highly recommend an RG350DX (or DXZ) because of the bridge and they, I believe, are still available new. They are a cool guitar IMO.

Make sure to check Pro Audio Star before purchasing. Sometimes they run insane deals on Ibby models. Got my SR655BBF that way from there.

I own two Ibanez guitars currently:

- Ibanez RG7421 (a nice 7-string that was pretty cheap).

- Ibanez AF95 jazz archtop (bought used).

Try out the guitar before buying. Ibanez makes some excellent guitars that aren't super expensive. I used to own a Prestige S model and it was nice, but not that much (or any) nicer than some of the cheaper S models, including the Floyd unit.

Thanks for the input. I've got good price quotes (about 20% off normal street price) on the models I'm looking at, but they have to be ordered because nobody in my area stocks any of them.

I was pretty set on the 450 because I like the looks but I have read that the bridges are indeed cheap. I want a classic-looking RG with the pickguard, so they're hard to come by in today's spalted/burled/flamed/quilted/massaged/played-classical-music-when-they-cut-the-tree-down market.

I owned an AS103NT that was a fantastic guitar, so I'm hoping to get something that feels that nice.

Sorry, I forgot to ask: Modal (or anyone else with similar experience), how are the current Prestige models? I've read they aren't what they used to be, but people say that about all kinds of things.

BrentD, From my limited experience Prestige models are pretty darn good with high attention to detail plus there is pup choices other than Standard series Quantums. They are built in Indonesia but Ibanez seem to take a lot of pride in there products wherever they are manufactured. Like all guitar purchases though, as you already know, it's always worth trying before buying if possible.

I personally have enough confidence with Ibanez products to order blindly. I did this with both the S670QM (which is part of the Standard series but is a classy guitar) and Hermen Li EGEN18. I did advise the vendors that if they had any issues I would not accept the guitars and they were OK with that.

I've being trying to resist ordering another S Series but if I do it would be a Prestige without a doubt.

So I'd prefer the 80s-styled one with a pickguard and a maple board, but a local place got in a '93 RG470. MIJ, Edge trem, Wizard II neck, $279. I think it might be enough to scratch the itch.

EDIT: Edge, not LoPro Edge.
