Had a pretty severe crash last Wednesday. (Is there any other kind in a classic bug?)

Got busted up ribs, sternum, vertebrae, knee... I was rolled to the trauma center from the scene.

I kept trying to discreetly get the attention of the officer before we rolled, to let him know I was carrying a concealed weapon, but at that point my speech consisted of little squeaks due to my compressed chest.

At the ER they began cutting my clothes off and I summoned enough air to belt out, "there's a loaded gun on my right hip!" The ER staff jumped back as if I'd said "hey, there's a rattlesnake in my pocket."
Kinda comical, but with the morphine drip not yet started, not enough to make me laugh.

They summoned the local police who took charge of the weapon and my retired LEO credentials.

The next day, I was being wheeled to yet another X-Ray session and found one hallway of the hospital jammed with on-duty officers. One of their own had just been shot and brought in. Made me put things in perspective.

I'm now home looking like a Mutant Ninja Turtle with my body and neck braces, getting ready to do battle with insurance companies.
My 70 bug is a total loss ...... first accident it had in 47 years.

Ironically, this is the only VW in my fleet with lap AND shoulder belts. The shoulder belt saved me a lot more damage, as evidenced by its imprint across my chest.

When I had my big motorcycle crash I wasn't carrying my weapon. I remember several officers asking where it was. They thought it got thrown clear and didn't want any kids finding it.

I think I said 20 times I left it at home.

Hope you heal fast.

Sorry to hear about this! Hope you feel better soon.

I put about 70,000 miles on my '61 back in the 60's when all the other cars on the road were giant by comparison.

Always figured if I got in a wreck at least there was a gas tank in front of me to soak me down real good and make my exit from this world a spectacular burst of flame.

It would also take my mind off the fact the steering wheel column had gone through my chest like a spear...

LOVED that car though and wish I still had it as my daily driver!

Gato, I'm glad you're OK. I hope the healing process goes well....and quickly. Also sorry about your Bug. At least you had some comic relief with your concealed weapon and it doesn't become an issue. Good look with your insurance company. Best of luck and mucho Mojo sent your way.
