I have a VHT special 6 and while changing a preamp tube I noticed the smaller transformer of the two (sorry Not sure what to call it) has developed an orange color on the outside. Everything works fine just never seen this before.

That's the output transformer.

Rub it with a white paper towel. Does the orange come off on the paper towel? If so, it's surface rust...if it's on metal.

If it's on metal and the insulating paper, it's simply the factory lacquer coating changing color (yellowing) over time due to repeated heat/cool cycles. See link below.

Here's an extreme case of

yellowing lacquer on an old OT.

If that's what you have there, it's normal unless your OT is excessively overheating due to poor impedance matching, or poor ventilation, etc.

If it gets too hot to touch, it may be overheating.
